I forget who it was but someone said a while back when I asked when anyone things W7 will ship as the default OS and they said when Vista came out it replaced XP over nite and W7 did exactly that. Vista will be collecting dust on the shelf to W7 just has Windows XP did to ME .

3 days...... Vista RIP!!! Bad memory! We should have Vista smash the disc parties!!! Most hated OS of all time ( well next to Millenium)

Windows 7 is the greatest OS to come out since XP SP2 ( XP was not good until SP2 )

Windows 7 just about kicks Apple in the butt too, Seriously I have been using 7 since April 2009 and its awesome all around.

So say yes to 7 and goodbye to Vista and to XP

    7 is the best!

I agree with you 100%. Been using W7 since May 2009 and it is in fact awesome. Vista was awful at first yes and had major compatibility issues but as of now its pretty decent. But it will rank right up with Millennium Edition. It might even go down at one of the worst Microsoft products of all time in a few short years once support for its retired.

But I am really happy its not the default OS anymore. Hope everyone loves Windows 7.

I bought studio xps 1340 in september and registered for easy upgrade. Now if I ask dell to send me a os cd will they send me vista or win7, or will I have to pay the tax and shipping to upgrade to win7.

Your system would include the FULL version of VISTA. You'll get the upgrade disc but that's only the upgrade disc and does NOT contain a FULL VERSION of Windows. Vista must be pre-installed first. Not to sound mean or anything but this is WHY ALL OF YOU SHOULD HAVE WAITED IF YOUR IN QUESTION ABOUT 7 AS THE DEFAULT OS.

Anyone who ordered before today Oct 18 will receive VISTA AS THE MAIN OS with Vista Factory install discs and the WINDOWS 7 UPGRADE DISC once mailed out separately.

If ordered on or after Oct 18 from Dell then you shall receive Windows 7 as the main default OS with nothing to do with Vista.

Would have waited if i could, but needed the notebook, using win7 rc anyways. Upgrading shouldn't be a n issue but a fresh clean install will not be possible :( .

    Thanks for the info matt

Yup, I understand, hope I didn't sound rude, I was just saying, but yeah. You can perform a fresh install with the upgrade.

i dont know why people are happy with win 7, isnt it vista RC2 ??? Well yes even yesterday my vista crashed with blue screen, but then i used Win 7 and i dont see a significant drop in memory usage etc. Lets hope it is better, since anyways i am fine with windows xp, i dont know why we are being forced to upgrade, when xp does everything fine. This is like a company that just wants to release newer versions which are not technically advanced, but rather slower and hogs resources. Waht about our upgrade kits when can we start ordering them ???? I have registered myself.

nobody is forcing you to upgrade to Windows 7. If ur happy using an 8yr old OS then go ahead.

Personally I am using Windows 7 on my lappy and Windows XP on my 4 yr old HP desktop. Although I have another 32bit license of Windows 7, I have no plans to install it on my old desktop coz WinXP+SP3 works perfectly fine on it. On my Studio 15 though, I am enjoying Windows 7.

    1. you are correct
    2. it will be 7 Home premium upgrade
    3. You can do a fresh install but Vista must be on the computer and activated to do so, there is a software check that 7 goes through to verify this ( stupid I agree)

    4. those ordered after the date will get a full OEM install disk of 7 except Dell outlet purchases they will still have Vista installed with the upgrade Disk available until the end of the offer.

    7 is worth the trouble

the upgrade disk and the full product are the same, as long as you do a clean install you will be fine

My ultimate runs sweet, my Father's Vista that came on his 1555 last month has blue screened 2 times already LOL

Even Beta 7 before the RC has never Blue screened on me!

    7 is sweet!

NO! Do the home work here, 7 was re-engineered its not Vista by a long shot, ithas some same elements as vista.
XP will no longer be supported by Microsoft
Uh 7 uses memory better then XP and better then Vista, it runs better then both, its stability is better. You will soon find that newer programs will no longer work in XP.

The next step for M$ is WIndows 8 and possible 128bit...........

XP will be around for a long time yet, and Microsoft have already said that
security updates will be pumped out free of charge for Office 2003 and XP until 4 August 2014.
Having said that, Win 7 does seem to be OK, certainly compared to Vista!

The only comment I have is, ??? I read that blog and they did not interview anyone and just used other articles that seem to indicate that a 128 bit OS will not happen, Uh if you want to keep a secrete this is the best way, claim there is nothing after a slip of some kind was made.

    article for interested

I will agree saying there is definitely going to be a 128 bit system soon is too hasty, but to say there won't be is like back in the late 80's and early 90's that the internet is a fad and will fade away.....................................

I would like to see M$ to deny that it is not in the works in a real current article first.

Windows 2000 is still used as well as 98 that does not mean its good to do so.

Why by the fastest processor and 8gb of ram to run xp? Do you see how that looks when the best Windows release since XP is out in 1 day?

I can't believe the way people are these days, frothing at the mouth about the new PC's but a great OS is about to be released ( Not just because I'm a beta tester, I tested Longhorn and hated it then) and I see these lack luster posts.

Believe me its good and stable and full of cool features.

I've been beta testing Win 7 for a while now, and involved with reading up on everything I can on it too. I'm very excited because its awesome!

But yes upgrade has the FULL product on it, but is limited to upgrade, what this means is you need vista to be on the computer you want 7 on, you put the disk in and start by having the 7 disk boot the system, then choose to install fresh, the disk will check to see if Vista is on the Hard drive then you should be able to do a clean install, I have not tried this yet but will in couple of weeks on my Father's computer this will give me first hand experience, Vista worked this way before, lets see if Win 7 does, it should from everything I read.

Had pay-day today on 22nd and needed a new laptop - I think that's a sign from the techno-gods that I should stimulate the economy!

But 128bit OS next? Doubt it, it's taken forever to get 64bit almost mainstream, and Apple and MS haven't completely gotten rid of 32bit in their latest OS's either... Give enough people time to badly code pages on the net and the mainstream consumers will all think they need powerful dual/quad cores and 4gb+ of ram to do the most basic things and then we can start pushing 100%adoption of 64 bit OS

Alright guys, the 128-bit W8 thing is getting a little off topic. If you want to talk about it, search for the other thread we have on the forum about this.
