    Selling M1530 parts, ok to do?

    I have a Dell M1530, so far I have replaced the memory (upgraded to 4GB), and the HD (upgraded to 320GB).

    Can I sell/give away the old parts? Or will that void the warranty? I mean the stuff is just sitting there collecting dust. I already have a portable external. I guess I could convert the other one to another portable external. But cannot do much with the memory.

    What do yall think?

    It wouldn't affect your warranty, but in the case that you would need to send it back, it is wise to have the original parts.

    If you send it in with 4GB RAM and a 320GB HD there is a fat chance that you aren't going to see those parts again. It's happened to many people that I know.

    It is indeed, but not when it happens to you. And there is no way to prove you shipped it with better HD and RAM so it's bye bye to 200$ worth!

    Trust me, it happened to my friend, let's just say he was not a happy camper!

    Remove the RAM and HDD when you send it back with a note saying you upgraded these parts so have kept hold of them. :p

    The hell? They take out the upgrades and then put your original specs back in?

    That is probably what I would do.

    And if something like that happened to me. Of course I would not be happy about it. But I would probably put some of the blame on myself for, not documenting in the phone/online call that I have upgraded the parts, or taken pictures, or at least something.

    Thats a pretty good idea, but I don't know how happy dell will be when they receive a laptop without ram and HD. They might not even see they note. even worse, they might send it back without repairing it.

    So your saying that DELL employees are crooks? :rolleyes:
    I seriously doubt it. Maybe this happens overseas, but not in the USA.
    If one was worried about that, simply take screen shots of your system info that also show the service tag and serial number and a letter stating your changes and you will have no problems.

    The other solution is to put in the original parts and send it that way.

    Standard procedure is to test your machine then ship out a brand new unit if it's a complex issue to solve (mobo replacement etc).

    No, I am not saying they are crooks.

    When someone sends their laptop in because it's broken, many times it is due to a faulty HD or RAM. So they switch out the old HD and RAM with new ones to test it. When they are done fixing it they are ready to send it back you.

    They see what specs you had when you ordered and send it back. Many times better because they don't have that specific size lying around. understand.
