So, I've decided that I want Dell to replace my 1400 and send me a new one. The three main reasons for my decision are:
1. The battery wobbles (Not such a big deal, but still it shouldn't)
2. The fan is on all the time. (It rarely shuts off, and I don't think this is normal.)
3. The casing around the screen looks like it isn't secured properly in places, causing light to come through.
I emailed Dell today and am waiting for a reply. I didn't spend $700 on a brand new laptop to have problems. If these problems persist, then I will be going w/ another brand. I really like this laptop, and hopefully the new one will at least fix issues 2 and 3. Any one else do this and have good results?

If you receive a new one, I don't think that issue will be addressed.
I hope someday in the near future Dell will recall this batteries and provide completely new ones for free -
also the light leakage is TOO COMMON. with my 1500 its the same way and ive read many other places the same thing.. you will probably see the same when your new one comes.. im debating on sending mine back but have a feeling it will be the same way..

Your next one is going to wobble to.
"2. The fan is on all the time. (It rarely shuts off, and I don't think this is normal.)"
This is normal on the 1400. Mine runs most of the time, doesn't bother me.
"3. The casing around the screen looks like it isn't secured properly in places, causing light to come through."
It's called backlight bleed. This is common on almost every single laptop made to a varying degree.
In other words... there is nothing wrong with your laptop. A replacement will just exhibit the exact same things and you'll just be wasting your time.
If you can't live with these things, do yourself a favor and just return the laptop for a refund. -

Read my previous post, this is a case of the case being deformed/coming away from the screen. I don't see why it would be normal for the fan to be running all of the time blowing out cold air? If it doesn't bother you, then good for you! It bothers me, and I have read many 1400 owners stating that it doesn't run all the time. The battery doesn't bother me, if the next one wobbles, then I will fix it with tape again. -
the fan on my 1400 is on all the time, but u can get a program to turn it off. The fan is silent running at max speed so it's fine.
I guess i got lucky cause i dont have any really light leakage that i can see. Just a very very low level in the bottom right corner, only noticable on black... and u have to look for it. -
If its running all the time, then I'm just going to have to send it back to them in a year or so anyway with a dead fan...
-
I don't think there is such a thing as a dead silent computer, unless it's water-cooled or something. Let the fan do it's job, but if it is making a loud unusual hissing noise. Then you should return it or get is fixed. -
^I just seems to run an unusual amount...idk Its not annoying but its constantly on... They are sending me a new one... I will keep whichever is better lol...
-
I have been busy and only used my 1400 for a couple of hours only.
I did not really notice much if the fan is running from noise as it is quite. Only thing I notice is the DVD when it runs as it produces quite a whizzing noise. -
-
^Yeah, I don't mind the battery, but you think Dell, one of the biggest computer companies in the world, could manage to make laptops whose battery's didn't wobble...
-
lol i know i have no prob with the battery either, just wish my hope turns into realization someday. -

The fan will run 24/7 because you have a DEDICATED GPU such as the 8400M, whereas the OTHERS that you have talked about have Integrated X3100 Graphics, its just the way it is built - you can always get a Fan Control Program like SpeedFan...
Sending 1400 back, going to try again
