I own an Inspiron 1545 and would like to set-up two profiles, one for use when on battery and one for use when plugged in. Basically, I want my laptop to run at maximum performance/brighter screen when plugged into the wall and have it run in a power-saving mode when running off the battery. The Windows7 power options don't seem to be able to differentiate between plugged-in and battery operation. Is there perhaps a program which I can install to do this or is it just not possible??

    Thanks!

By default, the Windows 7 power options DO differentiate between the two power states.

What effect have you notice that caused you to think otherwise.

It can differentiate but what I need is for it to change to a different power setting and dim the display when it is unplugged. Right now all it knows is to turn off the display/sleep automatically when it is running on battery power.

?? The very first screen when configuring a power plan has settings for screen brightness when on battery power.

Mine does dim automatically when I unplug it, in all four OS's. It should do this by default.

See the 4th post from this thread (random GOOGLE SEARCH result ;)): http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r23542147-How-to-dim-the-screen-when-the-power-is-disconnected

I looked at the link in the post above and it looks like my power settings window BUT I do not have any controls for brightness when I create a power plan. I am not sure why. I've got Windows 7.

Hummm, and I assume they don't show up under the advanced settings list too.

That's weird. I wonder if it is a display driver. Try uninstalling it and using whatever Windows detects and see if that fixes it. If that does we gotta find a driver that works for ya.
