I'm thinking of going with Server 2008 as my main OS on this laptop. Would there be any compatibility issues? I'm assuming that I would be able to use the regular Vista drivers?

Vista drivers work fine on server 2008 -
Just curious why do you want to run server on a laptop?
-
mebbie coz its quieter than most desktops? just a thought..
-
I managed to get vista working so I'm going to try putting server 2008 on a 2nd partition. Or maybe just run it in a VM -
i use my desktop computer as a server. and for a time i was running 2003 server.. the thing is i do use my desktop a little for multimedia. and i must say on 2003 server multimedia does suffer significantly.. video playback wasnt as smooth or clear. not to mention that occasionally you would find a program that does not work properly. plus the entire OS isnt stable as you think when you here server or even compared to old XP during normal user usage. after a few months 2or3 i got bored and erased the partition was thinking of going to windows media server but, thats a windows 2003 with all the features taken out..im using XP on it now.. its still does almost everything 2003 did. (just maybe a little less securely than 2003server)
the best advice i could give you is keep a partition of Vista/XP on your laptop at all times.. -
That's a cool idea

@Miller
any updates on this...I'm about to try it out on my lappy as well.
Tx, Ciao -
I'm still planning on doing this when I get a free weekend.
-
If I beat you to it, I'll let you know

I've been running it on my Studio 15 for the last month and a half now without any problems. The Vista drivers work fine and just an occasional oddball program will throw up the error message that you are trying to install on a server OS.
-
OH man, I'm excited!
-
You say Vista drivers work on Server 2008? Does that mean DirectX 10 will also work? Or should I not think about installing Server 2008 [Standard] if I want to be gaming on current games with my XPS?
-
-
Yes I've seen that page. Thanks for the response. Now I just need to figure out how to triple boot XP Pro/Vista Ultimate/Server 2008.
-
Start with XP ... the other two should be able to pick up on installed OSs without a problem.
I still haven't got around to this.
I do have more reason to do it now - I will be using Hyper V for one of my classes. Hopefully this weekend it will be going on my 1520 as a second OS (dual booting) and I'm going to see if I can get it to work with games. -
I keep reading about the virtualization - is it a substitute for something like, say, Virtual PC 2007?
-
From what I understand, it's a completely different concept from VPC. I guess Hyper V gives the guest OS direct access to the hardware whereas VPC uses software. Linux works with Hyper V.
-
Yeah Hyper-V gives the virtual OS access to the hardware, it just acts as a layer between them. Virtual PC emulates hardware giving the virtual OS no direct access to the hardware. I am glad to hear it works with Linux too. I think I am going to fire up a few virtual OSes since my one server isn't doing much else.
-
One thing that really helps hyper-v is being able to support Linux. For a lot of my classes I have to run a lot of virtual machines including linux. Between virtual box, VPC and vmware, VPC seems to be the best.
-
I didn't expect it to support Linux, but I am glad it does, I just installed the Hyper-V role yesterday and will work on some virtual OSes this weekend. Does your class provide you with Server 2008 for free or at least discounted?

MSDN Academic Alliance.

Nice. I had to get mine from Technet because I started using it before they added it to Dreamspark. Oh well I think it is worth it.
