As the title, I just set up 7950gtx on my e1705

But there was a problem, the heat sink did not really fit on the space between

CPU heat sink and the fan. Anyway, I solved the problem by cutting the wall

    of the space - -;

    Everything is great so far.

and it runs warmmer than x1400

    Has anybody done this before?

    I though the E1705 only supported x1400, 7800go, 7900GS go, or the 7900GTX.

Did you have to flash the bios or something?
Also how much did you pay for the 7950gtx?

I got it from ebay and I paid for about 500 USD

Of course performance is fantastic but it does get little hot(45~66C)

I didnt do anything on my laptop bios..

And i dont think e1705 doesnt support 7950gtx

Dell just doesnt offer that graphics card.

I'm very happy with playing almost every games ^^

well.. Fist thing I had to do after install the graphics card was finding

appropriate driver. And I found one for Vista from the Dell website

    and it worked nicely ^^

Is this what you wanted to ask??

    p.s. Im not a native English speaker... sorry about misunderstanding ^^;

    oh no problem

did you get it off ebay ?
and do you notice a huge increase in game performance over the previous graphics card?

also was it hard to install, was there a tutorial for how to put it in? [the card itself]

Yes, I did get it off ebay and there was huge increase game performance

for example, I couldnt run need for speed carbon fluently

    with full option and 1600x1200.

but now~ there is no problem at all,

It was not that hard to install.. but i could not just put it

    I have cut a wall besides cpu fan a little(about 3mm)

I also tried to find like a turorial that i could follow but I couldnt find

So I just looked manual which is on the dell website

That manual explains quite well, all you have to do is just follow steps.

I've often wondered if putting the 7950 in the e1705 would work since it's pretty much the same chassis as the xps1710. Guess this answers my question.

As far as I know this card is offered in an XPS system.

By comparing pictures you can tell that the 7950GTX has another piece of copper tubing on it that on an XPS would connect to the heat sink on the processor. (I think)

Other than that it looks almost identical to my E1705's 7900GS.

What I REALLY want to see is the original poster run 3dmark 05 and 06 so I can compare stock performance. A little temperature information would be awesome as well.

In the future this might just be a very viable upgrade for those of us that use these wonderful machines for desktop replacements.

It would also be cool if someone could post stock stats for both cards.

I kind of wonder if his is running at 7900GS speeds but still using 512mb of ram instead of 256.

    Interesting..

I run the 7950GTX on my XPS..

Didn't know you could physically take the sucker out and actually put it into another laptop.

Cool beans to that, if he's not BS'ing

Well, you can get them on e-bay. And the auctions normally mention the e1705 in some capacity.

I kind of wonder if they're hot. I don't think there is an upgrade for the XPS and I don't think that many people are bricking their $2000 laptops.

I thought about trying it but the price vs performence dosent equel out IMO. Might aswell get an XPS. But on the other hand if you have a X1400 or Intel graphics it would be a worthy upgrade.

If you have the intel card, you will need a new motherboard to upgrade to a more powerful dedicated card. GPU Guide clearly states (with user experience backing it up) that the Intel integrated mobos do not have the upgrade slot.

I really hope the OP comes back and posts some proof.

This would be a good upgrade a few years down the road.

The original poster isn't BSing. If you look around notebookforums.com, you'll see this is a possible upgrade, using the exact same procedure as putting a 7900 gtx in the e1705. In fact, I think the 7900 gtx and the 7950 gtx are identical physically, uses the same core, and the 7950 gtx just runs at higher clock speeds. Both have the dual pipe heat sinks which require a bit of plastic cutting once the laptop is opened up, so the second heat pipe/heat sink branch can fit behind the CPU fan.

Price vs performance is probably worth it for x1400 users, but not 7900GS users. An overclocked 7900 GS approaches 7900 GTX performance, so paying $500 more for a 7950 gtx is a pretty high price, unless you sell your 7900 GS afterwards.

    I'm thinking of getting either a 7900GTX or 7950GTX for my E1705........
I currently have a 7900GS....It has difficulties in running newer games @ 1920*1200 resolution with full details.

Yup that is true indeed, a few people over at notebookforums.com have already done this upgrade, same EXACT procedure as putting in the 7900 GTX in the Insprion 9400/E1705 its just a matter if you are willing to pony up the cash for the card!

Thats good to know that I can upgrade my card later on.

I REALLY hope dell continues to use the e1705 standard when they get the 8 series go cards out. It'd be awesome to have some sort of support for that.

I wouldn't bet the house on it. Dell is really overdue for a design change, and if they finally do change the design... :( Santa Rosa, and DX10, are only a short time away and a perfect excuse for Dell to revamp their lineup.

It doesn't mean that they will not use similar internal parts that could be compatible, it just means the chances are less than ideal.
