I was wondering if anyone has tried this set up as I am getting my m1530 on Tuesday!
I ave a 42" HDTV and I wanted to buy surround sound for it and use a HDMI cable to hook my new computer up to it, but any good surround system costs a few hundred dollars so that's a bit expensive. I was thinking of buying some computer speakers, like a 2.1 system, and then trying to use the HDMI cable to send a picture from the computer to the TV but keep the audio on the speakers I hook up to the laptop. So if I watch a movie, I'll have the speakers (which I'm sure is better than any built-in sound) from the computer, and then the picture from the TV. Of course when i do this, i'll move the speakers to the TV and place the computer on the shelf underneath the TV. Is this possible?

Awesome. Has anyone done this? It's only for a bedroom so I'm assuming a 2.1 system would be more than adequate

Oh you have the speakers hooked up to the TV or hooked up to the computer? I wanted to have them hooked up to the computer because I wanted to buy computer 2.1 surround sound speakers because they are significantly cheaper.
Another question.. with the HDMI anyway you could disable audio but still get video or vice versa? Just curious.

yeah, my setup is kinda temporary....but i have the 2.1 speakers hooked up to my HDTV for hd-dvds, hd-tv, and bluray/netflix with laptop. audio you can pick either hdmi or laptop speakers. video outputs as long as you have it setup correctly...not sure what your asking.

With the video aspect, I am asking if you could disable the HDMI cable from outputting a video output from the laptop to the TV and just do audio. I was just curious, so it does not need to be answered.

Well it seems like a good money saving loophole. Did you get a pair of expensive 2.1 or just cheap ones? I'm assuming any after market speakers are probably better than built-in ones?

oh yeah, my hdtv has 2 10watt speakers and they suck. and laptop speakers are just that, laptop speakers. i just happen to have a spare set klipsh promedia 2.1 i think they are called, around $140. sounds just fine for now. better than my current alternatives.

Sure... it works... for me. :D
My big Kenwood 400 watt speakers with a subwoofer gives better sound than most surround sounds will.
I have mine hooked up using the HDMI cables to the TV and in the sound properties using HDMI.

My subwoofer is behind the notebook for more effect so you can't see it.

Awesome! My room is prob the size of that picture haha anyways I was going to go with some logitech speakers because I hear they're pretty good. I am not gonna spend a lot because I am not a huge audiophile, but I hear the speakers on the m1530 are "tinny" and my TV's are decent.
The teddy bear on top is funny. What kind of TV is that? I got a 42" Toshiba Rezga and love it.

    Well, with my setup,
I don't have the "over-rated" blu-ray and the picture was absolutely fabulous.

I bought the turtle beach USB optical audio adapter, and it works great (with the blu-ray movies that work correctly.)

    Here's my setup:
M1530 (the 'crutch' of the whole setup)
LNT-4661F 46" Samsung LCD HDTV (connected to 1530 by HDMI)
Some Sony receiver (connected by optical audio through the turtle beach adapter)

When the movies play, it works great.

what audio does the 1530 output through HDMI?
is it just 2-channel or can it do 5.1 DD?

I know 2 channel works fine... haven't tried the 5.1
Anybody here use 5.1 yet? How did you set it up? (To help out mattldm)
