I got my Inspiron 1420 last wednesday, a little more than a week ago and overall, I like my laptop. I'm just not too sure about the screen. Its a 1440X900 glossy SEC/4477. It doesn't appear to suffer from "graininess" (whatever that is) and the colors are definitely vivid. Pictures look great

    My complaints are:

The 1440X900 may have been too small for my over-40 (almost 50 eyes). At work, I am using a desktop with a 17 inch standard screen set at 1024X768, so I'm wondering if I should have gotten a 1280X800.

When I tried to adjust it to a 1280X800, the images becamet blurry. However, I did find that when I increased the dpi, the image remained crisp and didn't blur.

I spend alot more time reading while on the laptop, as opposed to viewing pictures, videos, etc. and I do find being on the laptop for more than a few hours does strain my eyes. At work, I'm pretty much looking at my 17 matte for 8 hours straight and its never bothered me.

Okay then, for those of you that had been previously using 1024X768 (or 1280X800) matte and are now using the 14400X900 glossy do you find simlar problems?

Would I be better off replacing the screen with a 1280X800 matte or is it not worth the bother, since there wouldn't be any better?

What is the procedure with replacing screens with Dell?

    Thanks in advance.

Yeah probably a good idea to run 1280x800. Going from a 17 inch 1024x screen to a 14 inch 1440x screen is a big step.

You can not replace the screen easily through Dell. You are likely going to end up returning and then re-ordering a PC with the different screen. If you like the glossy finish, get the 1280x with TrueLife, otherwise you can get a matte finish 1280x.

Yes, I believe you should go with the 1280X800, but referring to the last post the quality of the matte screen is horrible. Everything is horrible about the screen; the color, viewing angles, and the brightness. I had it and returned it now im without a laptop I have to reorder it is seriously a pain sending it back. Anyways I suggest the glossy 1280x800.
