Depends on how bad he needs it, if he "needs" something now, get it now, if he can wait a short while he'll have the benefit of newer technology.

It depends on two things: 1) is it a need vs a want, and 2) his budget. If his budget is sub-$1000, then I say get a laptop now, since they're cheap nowadays and he most likely can't afford the Santa Rosa when it debuts. If he's looking to spend $2000-3000, and doesn't quite need it now, then I say wait for Santa Rosa.

Iceman, I think you should include this in your current FAQ. It seems like this topic appears more often than necessary.

someone brought up a good point in another thread.
If you're asking yourself if you should wait, that means you don't need a notebook that badly. Then yes, you should wait. It only means two good things, you can purchase older tech for cheaper, or you will have new tech available to you for your purchase.

    good luck

Well, peformance wise, unless your friend is wanting to complete some processor intensive applications like video editing or encoding, then he won't see much of an increase in performance with the newer processors. Like shima has said, you need to take the price element into account aswell. When Santa Rosa does release, it will be priced quite high, and only a few notebooks will offer the new platform. Dell will most likely be one of the first. After a few weeks, the price might come down, but it will still be somewhat high.

if you can wait until then, the price of the current technology will decrease, but probably not by much. In either case, it will be more beneficial to your friend if he waited, considering all the points.

Well as soon as Santa Rosa comes out (say a month later), Intel will announce a new platform. Then he'll ask himself: Should he wait again? And, if he waits, you may loop back to the beginning of this post :)

That new platform has already been announced, and its called the Montevina platform. it will support newer Core 2 processors, based on the Penryn core and it will have a TDP of 29 watts. The FSB of the newer processors will be 1066 MHz.

It might also support WiMAX with the new wieless adapter codenamed Shiloh. The new Cantiga chipset will support an 800 MHz DDR3 memory, and also much nmore stronger itegrated graphics. So, if you want to wait until 2008 for this platform to be released, then by all means, wait if you wish. :)

Yes, there should be a new line of products from Dell. They are doing very poorly recently, with the current line of notebooks. Along with their purchase of Alienware, I do strongly think the new line of notebooks will be far better.

    Wait for it!

I have a feeling Dell will be introducing a new line-up as soon as Santa Rosa is rolled out. I would wait since Dell's notebooks are really looking old in style now.

Definitely wait. I simply can't see the logic in NOT waiting it out for 3 more months, and being assured that you have the latest technology. It would be pointless not to wait, especially if you can.
