    Studio 1558:
    Core i5-520M
    4GB RAM DDR3
    500GB HD 7200RPM
    ATI HD5470
    730€

    Sony Vaio EB1S8E
    Core i5-520M
    4GB RAM DDR3
    500GB HD 5400RPM
    ATI HD5650
    750€

Looking for reliability, never bought my own laptop before.

VAIO E Series has some problems:

    bad screen quality
    terribly bad speakers
    really short battery time

extremely annoying high pitch sound that can't be fixed
(most laptops have it, but some don't)

I know the graphics card is much better in the vaio, but I'm not a serious gamer, just casual and don't need top quality.

Computer studies student, almost finishing my studies, so I want this laptop for software
developing, virtualization, etc, and I'd want it to last for 4-5 years.

Important it is to say that I'll be moving it around almost everyday, so I'd appreciate low weight, but I need to stick to a 15.6" (studio 14" is not offered in my country); and I need it to be resistant to the transport.

    Thank you

Personally, I agree with what you said.
My experience of Dell has been good (I've just ordered a Studio 1558 and had a 1750 before which was difficult to fault, save for some casing flex).
I've also had experience with two Sony Vaios, and both have been an absolute nightmare!

    Hope this helps, Richard

Given the price, I'd go for the Sony. The Sony spec is actually a lot better for the price and it's a SONY for god sake. Will be much better in terms of durability when moving around, the dell will prob fall apart after a week. I have a studio 15 and have only taken it off my desk once... its too flimsy and fragile to be moved around. I shouldda just got a desktop in hindsight.

i've seen both computers for real today at a local shop (too bad the models they had were studio 1555 and the same vaio with different specs).

I love VAIO's design. the screen.. well, it's not that it's too bad, the problem is the viewing angle is really ty. you gotta have screen pointing at your eyes or the colors will fade really badly. the speakers are also bad, but I don't see it to be really important.

    so, my conclusion:

dell speaker and screen are indeed better, but dell design is way too... classis... cheap plastic feeling, too thick and heavy... I think I got a little dissapointed with it, I was almost convinced to go for the studio 1558...

now I don't know if I should buy the VAIO.
this is the problem I haven't been able to check today, but I fear I might face if I buy it...
