I'm going for the xps m1210, specs on sig. I checked it out today in a store and liked it very much. I plan on taking it with me everywhere I go so portability is a plus. I plan to play some games on it BF2, Unreal tournament and BF2142 when it comes out. Ì'm ok with the screen size, might even get an external screen. Has anyone had any regrets with it?

I'm very sensitive to the slightest errors, how is the keyboard? Does the palm rest squeek when gaming? Does the battery rattle? So on.

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Thanks

Oh yeah, does anyone know the minimum requirements for BF2142? Think I would be ok?

just keep in mind that the GPU is only 64MB dedicated and 192MB shared...Dell doesn't really want you to know that.

even given that, I still think that 7400 card would work fairly well...

make sure that the HDD you select is a 7200RPM as it will help you with gaming performance. And also note that the 7200 drives may delay the ship date of your m1210, because in another thread it has been reported that they are in short supply.

And on the external screen, know that the m1210 has only a VGA out and not a DVI out. I am not sure how that will affect you resolution but I am sure someone else on here may have some better info.

Other than that, welcome to the club!

I run an external monitor with VGA at 1680x1050 with no problems. I believe the physical limit for VGA is above 2048x1536...after than you probably need DVI.

    Linky: http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/chipsets/graphics/gma900/gma900.pdf
It states that the GMA 900 can support up to 2048x1536, and the GMA900 (it isn't the 7400 but it uses the same tech for the VGA port) only has a VGA port...I'm sure you'll be fine.

The minimum specs for 2142 are the same as the ones for BF2. 2142 just has more goodies added to it so that it can get to a higher graphical level than BF2 could. BTW for how it will play, I play BF2 @ 1280x800, everything high, high dynamic light, no dynamic shadows, and no AA. It plays high 30's. You might do a little less because of the 1gb less ram than I have, but BF2 and 2142 will still play well on your system.
