Well, let's just say that I wish I would have found this forum earlier, lol.
Last Friday I had a friend of mine order an I6000 for me through his employer's network (boeing) so I could receive his 18% discount (plus sales tax unfortunately). After researching this forum for a couple of hours last night I'm now seriously wavering on my choice. It's not supposed to ship until this Friday (12.23) so I have some wiggle room for a decision.
For reference, my use is for email, internet browsing (mostly forums), MS office functions, some song and video downloads (mostly just for copying though), and photo/light video editing. No gaming at all.
Here's what I ordered:
I6000
-Pentium M Processor 750 (1.86GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB)
-WSXGA+ LCD
-1GB Shared DDR2 SDRAM 2 Dimms
-X300 64MB Video Card
-60GB 5400rpmHard Drive
-8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
-the rest is just the standard base I6000 system
The total for this is $1068 shipped to my door. I thought that was a pretty solid deal until I came here, lol.
Here's what I'm considering instead:
I9300
-Pentium M Processor 740 (1.73 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB)
-WUXGA+ (TruLife) LCD
-512MB DDR2 SDRAM 2 Dimm
-X300 64MB Video Card (same as I6000 on order)
-60GB 5400rpmHard Drive (same as I6000 on order)
-8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability (same as I6000 on order)
-the rest is just standard base I9300
If I were to order this my total would be ~$1166, or just $100 more than I'm spending on the I6000 I have on order. :decision:
So I'm just curious what others might do if they were in my shoes. Save the $100 and have a smaller, fairly fast, more portable laptop, or spend the extra $100 for a somewhat less equipped laptop with a fricken' huge screen for desktop replacement purposes.

Good question, I have the I9300 and am partial to it, but you could save some money on the 6000 if you upgrade the RAM yourself. The screen is an upgrade though. My recommendation is for the price I would go for the I9300.

9300 all the way. Nice rig. If you game, get the best graphics card you can afford. Forego the memory / hard drive upgrades if you have to. It's cheaper to upgrade the memory yourself (simple as buying it and popping it in). For the money they charge for hard drive upgades, you're better off putting an extra 40 bones with it and buying your own drive.
My original plan was to leave the 60gig stock and buy my own. Then when I got the laptop and new hard drive, leave the stock drive as is, remove it, bag it and store it. If any problems arise with the laptop, put the stock back in, send it off to the repairman.
Okay.. I'll shut up now. -
Personally, I prefer the I9300.
If you're interested in a larger notebook (bigger/better screen and more weight), go for the I9300, if you're concerned about portability, I might suggest sticking with the I6000, as it's definately smaller though the weight may be similar.
As suggested earlier, I'd also recommend getting your RAM aftermarket from a retailer such as http://newegg.com as they're much cheaper than dell, and it's not a difficult upgrade to do yourself. -
go for the i9300

How much do you travel is the thing, smaller = easier to pack. And are you comfortable with small fonts?
Should I cancel my order for my I6000 to order a I9300 for similar price?
