I was wondering if anyone would like to share there experience with vista with their laptops. My E1505 should run It good but I was wondering a few things.
I was on dell chat earlier and they said I will void my warranty if I do not purchase from them. I was hoping to just be able to go to Bestbuy and pick it up without having to wait a week for it from dell for virtually the same price. Should I do this anyway? Also, does anyone know how well or not as well it will run games compared to xp I heard it had a slower performance rate? Anything else I should know?
    Thanks,
    Mike

more reasons not to buy dell lmao you shouldnt void any warrenty by changing your os sounds like a ploy by them to get more money. I wouldnt get vista yet alot of software wont work on it yet and some drivers dont work right. Wait 2-3 months for it to mature some look for some viri made for it and worms as its new.

Changing software isn't like changing a CPU. It will not void the warranty...if Dell tries to give you that excuse (and they deny you service later) just call the BBB.

Or not tell them you upgraded...

The chat person said he "Strongly Recommends" me going through dell so I don't void the warranty...I *****ed a little about that and he just posted the page with the versions and there prices then disconnected the chat instantly, a survey popped up and you can probably tell what I did with that :)

As stated you will not void your warranty. Whether or not to upgrade is a personal issue--if XP does all that you need your computer to do, why upgrade right now? Wait until Vista becomes cheaper and some of the bugs are worked out. You may be able to get an OEM copy cheaper on newegg.com

I have heard conflicting things regarding games in Vista. You should be fine with 1GB of RAM, but down the line you may find you need a little more to run Vista+your apps smoothly.

Personally, I'm going to wait until I can get it free from my university--i'm not in a big hurry as XP does everything I need right now. Ubuntu provides some eyecandy :)

Void your warranty? Silliness. Thats like saying you voided your car warranty by putting in gas at the gas station.

I agree with all that vespoli said. As for myself I will be holding off a while before upgrading to Vista.

The only thing that voids a warranty is when your software screws up. If YOU install a software that wasn't purchased by Dell, they are not responsible for the damages to your computer. That's what it means. Warranties rarely cover software problems, even if its Vista.

I totally agree with everyone on this board that updating your OS will not void your warranty. It is most likely a way for Dell to squeeze more money out of their customers. As far as moving to Windows Vista it is pretty much a matter of choice. I have been using Windows Vista Ultimate since it was release to Business back in late November. I have had very few issues, no more then a handful. And I have been using XP for quite sometime. To me it really isn't worth all the hype that it is getting. Yes the AERO Interface is nice, but it is not needed. But since Microsoft is already working on a Windows Vista service pack 1 or late 4th quarter. I would say hold out, and since XP is going to be supported for a few years longer there is no need to rush into it.

I'm running Vista Ultimate on my E1405 and it feels great. No problems so far, all my software works, and no driver issues. I ended up updating all my drivers, but the only one that wasn't already installed was the Ricoh card reader, and there's a driver on Dell's site for it. Feels snappier (for lack of a better word) than XP, looks a lot better, and has some nice added features. I'm holding off a bit on my desktop for gaming reasons, but i wouldn't hesitate to give it a try if i were you.

OEMs are going to be about the cheapest way to go. Also check other retailers for possible lower prices. Newegg however has never steered me wrong and always gets my business.

In a nut shell Windows Vista Ultimate is a combination of features from Vista Home Premium (MCE) and Vista Business. The easiest way to say it, Vista Ultimate is the TOP of the LINE.

i installed vista business on my laptop, had it for a day so far. runs amazing, and smooth. everything works. the only problem i had was all the softwere has to be new. I have to go get 07 anti virus, 07 dvd burning programs, ect. Also you might want to update to 1.5GB of ram or more. because without any programs running it used .5GB now add office 07 and Firefox and you hit your 1 gig limit.

It has Windows Defender built in, which is an anti-malware program. It does not come with it's own anti virus.

I'm running Vista Business on my e1705 with AVG Pro for anti virus and it's running like a champ.

The only problems i've had with software was Yahoo Messenger and the Beta release of Windows Mobile Device Center (for my Axim x51v).

As far as games, i've heard mixed success stories, but the truth is as drivers progress and games come out with patches to better handle Vista, gaming WILL be better in Vista then XP. Just as gaming was better in XP then 2000/98.

And if you're going to run ultimate you need AT LEAST 1.5GB of RAM as previously stated, because with Business i use on avg ~600mb just doing IMing, music and internet explorer.

Im going to go with Home premium that should be decent with my specs right? (see sig)
Edit: I also have Office 2003 on all of my computers.. this probably won't be compatible with Vista right?

I would wait to get Vista. Remember all the problems with XP in its first few month like drivers. A lot of large corporations are still running 2000 because of these issues. Wait 6 months for the bugs and security issues to get fix.

Those specs are fine, and Office 2003 is compatible with Vista.

You can install Vista and try it out for 120 days before having to buy a key. By default it allows you only 30 days but it is really set at 120 days (easy command to reset when 30 days is up). Anyway I have 3 computers running Vista Business right now and I like it alot. I would go with the 32bit version for now since its better supported.

It has everything but Anti-Virus built in. But Avast and AVG have free home virus progams available for download. I also didn't have to get a new version of Roxio Cd Creator.

    Not yet, i think.

I used the RC1 and it is not that different from XP (most improvements are on security), but it is not compatible with lots of applications.

If you love the Glass interface, try WindowBlind5 with the skin HilledSE made by Jemaho. It'll make your user interface prettier than Vista.

I will upgrade too, but not right now.
