I would go with Jet Black for the 1520 of course since I prefer my notebooks to be less conspicuous, but I'm wondering...say I would get the same exact (or as similar as possible) config for either notebook regardless of which one I choose.
The Vostro looks like a better deal, but I can afford either one as my config wouldn't be too obscene. Is the anything about the Inspiron that justifies the higher price?
Should I get the Vostro or the Inspiron, assuming the above?

Well I feel the Inspiron would be a better deal. The Vostro is literally the same laptop, except with a few changes geared towards the business work place. So, for example, you will get Vista Business in the Vostro, which may be a chore or a pain in day to day life.
For your question though, honestly, no, there isn't too much that justifies the Inspiron being more expensive IMO. I went for the Inspiron, just because it is geared towards the home user. I don't NEED Vista Business, I don't NEED a spill resistant keyboard, and I prefer the silver to the black... your choice though really. -
Hmmm. I don't mind the color on the laptop other than on the lid as that is what most people see. Either way, they would both be black. The OS doesn't really matter to me. I'd be happy with good ol' Windows XP considering Vista didn't wow me on my current Inspiron 6000. I'm super careful with my laptop, so I won't need the spill resistant keyboard either.
Anybody think the Vostro is just as good as the Inspiron overall? If it comes down to price, I might just have to make that my deciding factor since a few hundred bucks kept from being needlessly spent sounds good to me. -
I's exactly the same laptop, afaik.

So far, the only differences I know of between the Vostro 1500 and the Inspiron 1520 are: fancy colors for the lid, the availability of the OS disk (this seems to depend on where you live), the option for XP on the Vostro (also this does not apply to every country :-( ) and -wow- a nice box for the Inspiron.
Now, the colors are a matter of one's tastes; if you have your own OS you won't need the disks (besides, you could ask Dell to send a copy to you), plus you might have XP already installed, configured and tested on the Vostro (if you live in the US); and the cute box... well... I don't think that would make a difference.
Hence, if I were you I would go for the Vostro (besides, look at my signaturemy Vostro was some 250-300 bucks chaper than the equivalent Inspiron, and I have Vista Business that can be downgraded to XP).

You can place your order by phone and Get Home Premium on the Vostro.
I asked on the offchance when i ordered, expecting them to say its just Business or Ultimate on the website, and was pleasently suprised to be offered Home Premium its £10 less than business as well.
So you can take that out of the equation. -
it seems like inspirons have more problems such as grainyness and high piched noises and the vostros for the most part lack these
-
What material is the Inspiron chassis made of? As I know that the Vostro's is a magnesium alloy.
-
Had the Inspiron for 2 days before returning it due to the graininess. I'm on my second day with the Vostro and I like it a lot better. In part due to the screen being absolutely amazing this time around and I'm not sure if it's the black casing, but the material feels very nice.

Ok, I'm buying a Vostro. Thanks for the info, guys.
Should I get a Vostro 1500 or Inspiron 1520? (Assuming same config)
