I was wondering if latitudes are more reliable and better quality than inspirons. I'm choosing between an inspiron 8600 and a latitude D600. They are both pretty similarly priced with similar specs. Does anybody know anything about the battery life of the D600? I have found that I can save money because of the many things which are unnecessarily placed in the small business machines. If I downgrade from some of these things (like the extended business service plan) I can make this latitude very competitively priced for what I need, which is not going to be very much, and very rare gaming.

The Lattitude line uses parts and software that have been time tested, so they are generally more reliable. The Inspirons are more about pushing new hardware and usually have more issues, especially in the first few months of a release. At this point though, they've both been out for a while, I wouldn't have a problem going either way...look for the best deal.

it should also be noted that often times the Latitude and Inspiron series are essentially the same notebook with a different name and case. For instance, the Inspiron 600m and D600 are esentially the same hardware, as is the case with the Latitude X300 and Inspiron 300m.

Is it worth going for the latitude d600 instead of buying a 600m, since it will be more sturdy in the better case?

I have both Latitude D600 (company's) and Inspiron 8600 (my own). Got 8600 just a few days ago. Haven't really fully compared them but both are good to me. Company only support win2000 so they deleted window XP. From appearance, D600 is a bit better. Also D600 has both serial and parallel port that I use everyday at work. 8600 has none of those.

The old 8600 had those but the new 8600c removed them for chassis reasons. IE Dell wanted more money so they would remove parts and keep the same price.
