As you all probably know the M1330 seems to be having a lot of problems, http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=153970 and http://forum.notebookreview.com/poll.php?do=showresults&pollid=1961
I'm in deep need of a new laptop for my school though, and this one is the only one that fits my needs (light weight while still being powerful enough to handle some games and heavy photoshop work).
But should I just forget about it now that it has all these problems ? Or do any of you guys have any idea on when these problems will be fixed by dell ?

i love mine. Minor problems (gap above screen is tiny on mine, design flaw)(back picks up fingerprints)(keyboard flex over the dvd drive) that exist on most of them arnt much of an issue. If you're lucky, you should get one without major flaws (cpu whine, major build issues) and you will love it too.
I'm gonna be taking this to class every day and it is lighter than a few of my textbooks. As for gaming, i've run half life, nfsmw, and madden08 on a slightly o/ced 8400 and find the quality fine (you cant run them on max quality though, turn AA off)
as for photoshop work, as long as you plug in 4gb of ram you should be fine.
for me, this ended up being the perfect notebook, and the best avaliable at the time. Im sure that wont last long, but it's the reason i bought it. -
i am sticking with it dont have it yet but I hope i dont have so many problems like others but it does scare me to think that it might be far less then perfec

I second panda. It just won't happen. Some profs won't allow it and you'll find that typing notes isn't nearly as flexible as just hand writing them.
But should you decide to stick it out everyday, its certainly the right form factor to make that possible. -
Yea pretty much the laptop adds more problems than it helps in class. At least freshman-junior year. By your senior year you might be using it a lot as you might have ACTUAL work to do and real reasons to use it to contact people. Up until then, its mostly for show.
In contrast, you can and will be required to use your laptop constantly, as you will be required to do more ACTUAL work on the spot. -
I used mine every day in grad school. But that was 7-9 years ago.

Likewise...I taught for a few years at the private and college level.. I would believe, especially with this system which will stand out, that he or she will clutch it closely to each and every class.
Further to the author, I wrote about this once before. You need to take this forum with a grain of salt. You are getting reviews from the pickiest bunch of people around. Its being looked at with a fine tooth comb over and over; there are even close up pictures of apparent flaws available.
This laptop will be loved by the average user. They will stay up late at night just awing it amazement.
This site is also only a very small compass of the total amount of purchasers.
Imagine, I see a small defect on something on the computer and print it. You then get a bunch of people saying , "Ya...me too"
Wanna try a similar experiment? Go stand in a crowd and look up. Keep looking up. Watch how many people start dong what your doing for no reason.
You will love it!!! -
But another question: Is the CPU whine covered through the basic warranty (can i just send it in and they have to repair/send a new one?)
And which warranty would you suggest? Is the 2/3/4 years premium warranty really worth its money? And what about the "accidental damage support", worth getting? -

I'm probably going to cancel my order and order an Asus V2S, provided that it's available within the next week or so. If I had received my m1330 already, my decision of course would be much harder, but Dell made it easy for me by giving me a ship date of 8/28 when I ordered on 7/8. Paper launch anyone?

Class aside, I find that I usually bring my laptop (also 13.3" but an old Vaio) when I go to work. A lot of times I don't go to the library so there aren't computers available...so I bring my laptop.

I agree with shamble here. It is ridiculous if you have to depend on luck with a USD 2000+ product. This makes me doubt again......should I wait for the sony SZ6. Then again, the sony has not convinced me either since the SZ has no design upgrade whatsoever and the first review of the SZ6 I saw on this forum was far from impressive. Do I really have to choose the least sucky laptop for around 2000????
If only the Sony CR had better battery life.... -
What I did benefit from my laptop is that I could quickly check online sources, or bring up a problem I had on an assignment and show it to a teacher. If there was group work, we could use the laptop instead of ganging up in the computer lab, hogging up space (assuming there was space to be had in the first place). All of which makes life easier, but by no means important.
So moral of this story, a laptop is not REALLY necessary. If you're willing to wait, or even hold off on buying completely, do it. Colleges go out of their way to provide computing resources for students, so don't sweat it if you have to wait for your laptop. -
Maybe noone is listenning to what is going on. Its not just Dell. Its not just this processor. Its not any type of system. Its all of them.
The phenomena is called piezoelectricity (prob spelled wrong) and it has been seen IN EVERY manufacturer at one point or another. Look around the site. Its very prevalent in the new pavilions.
Its also in desktops...
Saying Im not getting this or that isnt going to lesson the chance of it being there...
As I said earlier, some companies have even accounted for the noise by saying its within standards... -

you bandwidth hog you..
Well as for me, i think im gonna wait til i actually see the laptop for myself instead of the "hearsays". People's opinions, as someone else mentioned very accurately, are often and easily influenced by others, so as you can see, you have a wide range of opinions to be influenced by.
I suggest you try it because it really is a beautiful machine which is flawed by very minor problems, but in the end, dont they all? This one just got bashed out to hell because the hype was so big. -
I'm using my current laptop at school everyday and I've been doing that the last 2 years. And I do feel that I get more out of my classes having it
Should I get the m1330 even because of it's problems ?
