Hi I have this laptop with a 7950 GTX 512MB so I can only play Dx9 games.

Would installing XP make it run a bit smother than vista which I am guessing uses a lot of memory and CPU ??

    Yea it should
I've never compared the 2 myself but I have heard that that does improve performance

Since the M1710 model was originally made to use XP, I'd use it with XP.
Unless you do a lot of tweaks on Vista, it will use a lot more RAM than XP, so you'll have more free RAM for your games with XP.
