I had to reformat a friends Dell Inspiron laptop today. Everything is running lean and mean but should I install the Dell QuickSet application? Is that the program that allows hotkey control of the brightness, volume etc?

I do not have Dell Quickset controlled and I can control brightness and volume with the keys.

I have the software installed. Yes, the software control all those things you said. It isn't going to creat any overhead in my opinion.

It enables the Wireless Catcher switch that you have on the computer. Also, it displays a gauge when changing brightness or sound. Pretty useful.

It controls the Fn button that allows you to switch display output mode as well.

Yes I see that I can use the hotkeys without Quickset but I might install it if there is a visual display and volume also.
One last question, is it possible to uninstall the Dell Wireless Configuration utility without uninstalling the driver? It seems when I tried to uninstall the utility the driver went along with it.

Actually you do not need to have quickset installed in order to use fn + hotkey functions
