This isnt the first time that this has happened to me, I think this is about the 5th time I've had this problem with my Dell Latitude D410. The other times the problem either went away or I restarted the computer from scratch.

This problem does not allow me to fully install some of my programs, because I have to manually turn the computer off eventually, and it is recognized as an "interrupted shutdown." This also prevents me from using system restore to fix the problem because the laptop was not shutdown correctly.

I have tried many things to fix this problem, and i am hoping theres someone out there who actually has a solution for this problem.

What fixed this problem for me is to check your ram. Maybe you have a faulty module so if you have 2 sticks try taking one out and checking if any of them shutdown fine. If it does, then they gave you faulty ram.

I only have one memory stick so that method probably wont work for me, unless the ram that I have right now itself is faulty. But this problem started recently, maybe a year or so after I got this laptop.

Have you tried disabling the startup items and services in msconfig? Problem could be software related.

What I have figured out is that it is one of the services in msconfig that is keeping my computer from shutting down, and I have windows xp not vista. All my devices are working properly im sure of that. The problem is that Ive tried verifying which service it is but the service works sometimes and sometimes doesnt, so it is hard for me to know which service works and which one is faulty.
