Does anyone else find that it takes a very long time for the M1210 to shut down?
-
Windows xp has the service shutdown time set to 20000 ms which equals 20 secs (no wonder it takes so long).
Go to regedit and change the key :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\WaitToKillServiceTimeout
I set mine to 0 ms and now i shutdown way fast. Experiment with the settings.
Edit; to go to regedit start-> Run...-> then type regedit and click ok -
there is another regedit that could help out
HKEY_USERS-->.DEFAULT-->CONTROL PANEL-->DEKSTOP-->AUTOENDTASKS( in right panel) set to 1.
I'm not sure if it does the same as what dudes edit does, but it generally helps out. -
thanks, I'll give it a shot

on my e1505 i had a similar problem and figured out zonealarm was causin it. shut down zonealarm and it shutdown quickly. If you have zonealarm, this could be your problem

didn't work :/. To be more specific, my problem occurs when i press Start, followed by "Turn off computer." After I press that red button my computer basically stays stuck with the hourglass on my mouse and stays that way for minutes at a time. The only way to shut down after this is to go to my Windows Task Manage (Ctrl+Alt+Deleter) and select shut down. Any ideas? I've never had this problem with previous dell laptops...

Did you clean install Windows after you recieved the laptop?
How many processes are running? -
Is there anything in the registry I can do to make my pc boot up faster? My laptop is fine but my desktop shows the welcome screen for about 30 seconds between the time I log on and when my desktop appears.
-
If you have a fairly fast desktop you probably have to stop some startup items in msconfig(start->Run...->msconfig). -
I've already stopped alot of the startup items and disabled services I don't need.
Specs are:
Athlon 64 3200+
1GB DDR400
160GB IDE
6600GT w/vf-700 cu
Audigy 2 ZS
Etc.. -
I actually haven't done a clean install after receiving my M1210. Would you suggest I do this? Are there still problems with drivers after doing it? (And if possible, can anyone post/send me directions on how to go about performing a clean install on a M1210, ty
)

It's right over here:

Make sure you got all your drivers ready, either on the CD you got from Dell, or download them from the Dell website and burn them onto a CD. -
Thanks. I actually think I figured out the problem. It seems that Mcafee was a really large system "hog" and was slowing down my system a great deal. After disabling it and starting to use Avast, my laptop has really increased in speed; so much so that it's amazing.
