    Sick of Dell at home support....

    Well, not Dell specifically, but the computer repair shop that my work orders keep getting sent to :mad: . This lady that keeps working on my laptop is not even A+ certified (I am by the way). It took her almost 2 hours to install a new friggin palm rest, and she managed to somehow screw it up. This new work order is for another palm rest.

    Anyways, I am qualified to work on computers, and I have worked on many dell models in the past (Inspiron 9300, Inspiron 6000, Inspiron 5100, Inspiron e1705, Latitude d630, XPS M170, XPS m1710 and a few others). Since the work order is already processed, do I still have to follow through with it? I would love to just install the palm rest myself and send the old parts back to dell.

    Edit: BTW, this isn't for my XPS M1710, but my Inspiron 1520.

    It really depends on the service station that sends your technician - you can ask them if you can install the parts yourself for whatever reason, and see if they comply with your request (some may, some may not because of their contractual agreements with Dell in which they get paid on an hourly basis for the call, etc.). However, for future reference, next time you need a dispatch, as Dell to send it POS (parts only service), in which case you will recieve the parts and you will also be responsible for sending them back (they send you a pre-paid label)

    Its been really hit or miss for me as far as techs go (mostly miss). From now on, I will definitely start requesting POS. I wasn't even aware I could do that :) . Thanks for the help

    You're welcome. Just remember that if you use POS, you should really be comfortable with replacing those parts (which I am sure that you are). Also, Dell wont cover any cosmetic damages resulting from you replacing the parts yourself (i.e. you break the plastics, etc.) This is only applicable if you have the standard NBD warranty. If you have the complete care, well then this could be termed as an "accident".

    I was offered a job through Qualserve to repair Dell latops at the flat rate of $32 a call. That includes all travel time plus onsite time. Not enought money with todays price of gas. Just because someone is A+ certified does not mean they have actually taken anything apart including laptops.

    Techs are paid to service as many computers as possible, not to give them their love. The end result is poor service, missing/stripped screws, scratches, manhandling, and lost/broken components.
