Many people seem to be saying that the "glossy" screens are the ones mainly affected, the glossy screens on the 1520. What is a glossy screen??

I ordered a vostro 1700 and was given two options:

    1. 17.0" Widescreen WXGA+ (1440x900) TFT Display [Included in Price]

    2. 17.0" UltraSharp™ Wide Screen WUXGA (1900x1200) TFT Display with TrueLife™ [add £90.00 or £3/month1]

I chose the first one. Are either of those glossy?

All are glossy except for the 1280x800 matte screen.

well. it seems that in the first batch of 1520's the 1440x900 screens were the worst hit by graininess.
but, if you JUST ordered yours, perhaps DELL has attempted to fix the problem by now.
secondly, many who have graininess don't seem to care. apparently some are worse than others, but I can't confirm this...

    No, Soviet, it's not glossy.
Only the "TrueLife" screens are glossy. The one that doesn't say "TrueLife" is not glossy. (Stella was talking about the 15" laptops.)

I don't think it is dell, it is just the brand. The AUO screens are grainy, the Cxx whatever their name is (sorry I'm tired and can't remember) are not grainy. Dell won't change supplier unless they get them for cheaper, i think we will be stuck with it. But, AUO's quality probably suffered due to the HUGE order numbers.
This is all from what i've gathered on the threads, I may have misused some info. If I did, sorry

so in the event i need to replace my screen, when i call, should i request they use the Cxx, or will they not do that?

i think you're completely right about that. but it is Dell's job to acquire the right parts for their laptops. it is dell that you'd turn to to replace the screen if there was a problem.

    oh. @soviet779:
stella's right the first option is not TL (truelife), and therefore is not glossy. It's impossible to know if the vostro will have any screen problems atm, although it looks to be the same build as the 1520. in any case, the first option that you chose should be safe.

I could be wrong but I believe glossy screen is a "feature" and Dell calls it "TrueLife", HP calls it BrightView, Acer calls it something else. So if you order #1, maybe you will get a matte screen.
