When i first got my dell inspiron (see sig) it was set so that when i closed the lid it would go into "hibernation mode" well "hibernation mode didnt work out so great for me because it would never come out of its "den"! i would just get a black screen.
so i asked some of my friends that have used laptops longer than i have and they said that the hibernation mode sucks and to just put it too sleep, so i did this and everything was working fine, well now after i downloaded service pack 1 for vista when i close the lid i hear a "DUNT" (its not a beep but its a sound out of the speakers i dont now how else to describe but that).
Thats when i know i am in trouble then it reboots itself and comes up to the login screen and i get the following message.
"Compatibility issues between this version of windows and PC-Cillin internet security 14" " to solve this problem Trend Micros suggests upgrading your version of their program"
well i tried that apparently the version i have cant be upgraded with their upgrade kit.
Just so you know i have contacted dell and they told me that i had a bad lcd monitor and were gunna replace, i said thats BS because this is a brand new machine ill send it back and you can send me a new one"
well turns out its not a bad monitor its just hibernation mode sucks.
just so you know i have not contacted Trend Micros for any help, mostly because i find that technical support for almost anything is insufficient, because usually i know more than the so called "tech" and thats not saying much!
so i am here before i go to that step because i find the people on this forum to be more knowledge than the average "tech support" that i have delt with in the past.
if anyone has any suggestions that i can try ill accept anything because this is really frustrating, if i power down the computer and power it back on everything works fine it is just in sleep mode when problems occur and its not all the time either.
thanks for any input guys/gals!

get rid of pc-cillin..........
-
PC-Cillin caused nothing but problems for me... it prevented me from getting addressed from public access points, blocked programs without asking, and took up a ton of system resources. The product sucks... thats why we get a 15 month subscription free with the purchase. Just get rid of it and use AVG free and windows firewall.
-
Plug in a USB device and then unplug it. Does the "DUNT" sound the same? I notice that noise occassionally on my computer but it doesnt reboot or anything. I never re-installed PC-Cillin after re-installing the OS.
-
Go with AVG or Avast.
-
I've got an m1330 and whenever I close the lid I get the sound like I've removed a USB device......and then when I open the lid I get the sound like I've plugged in a USB device. (I don't have mine set to sleep/hibernate when I close the lid)
As others have suggested, remove PC-Cillin, it's garbage. -
problem only goes when you uninstall pc cillin strip it out and use avg free and windows firewall no issues then
-
I turned off PCcillin's Real Time Scanning in the taskbar because I thought it might be causing problems with excessive hard drive activity and other problems. I'm still evaluating the results though.

Thanks guys, ive noticed a couple suggestions for free anti virus software and i have used Avast in the past currently have it on two desktops and one other laptop, but i figured since PC-Cillin is a "Marketed product" it would probably be better security than Avast, but damn i think i was wrong!
oh and the other one you guys suggested is AVG? is this better than Avast, or just user preference? if i google it can i find the freeware version of it?
thanks again, i think i am going to have to agree that PC-Cillin is garbage, and that could explain the fluctuations in my hard drive space going up and down between about 2 or 3 gigs. -
I've used AVG for as long as I can remember.. I've never had any problems, and it doesn't eat up system resources like other anti-virus programs. Google AVG free, it'll be the first result.

PC-cillin has an update for a problem with SP1.
It's one of the links on this page.
Unfortunately it only seems to be for regular versions, and not for the Dell version. There's another update for Dell, which updates to version 14.6, but it doesn't say it's specifically for SP1 problems.
I tried the hotfix and though I'd hosed my computer. There was no kind of progress bar or any kind of indicator to let you know anything was happening. I let it sit for a while. Nothing appeared to be happening. No discernible hard drive activity. Nothing would work. Task Manager wouldn't work. I couldn't load any programs, though I could open My Computer and browse my hard drive. My Internet connection was gone. I tried rebooting. It wouldn't respond. After a while there seemed to be a flurry of hard drive activity so I let it sit. Then nothing. Nothing. Couldn't reboot from the start button. I eventually stopped it by holding down the power button, and after it started up again it seemed OK. I'm not sure if it updated anything at all. But if I get any more of those warnings about Trend being incompatible with my version of Vista, Trend is history. -
Just to let you guys know.. AVG Free 8 was just released, and I think it looks much cleaner. It's the first real update to the program since Vista was released.

Is it made to work with Vista SP1?

I kind of hate getting rid of something that I "paid for" however i think the warranty in it self is worth the money.
I also agree though if i get one more of those messages i am going to contact Tend Micros and ask them whats going on with it, and then i will just download a freeware antivirus, such as Avast or AVG. -
I have used Trend Micro for use on my laptop and other without that issue? I have it on my Vista Business laptop. Let us know what you find out.

I was a Beta tester for Trend Micro/PC Cillin Int. Sec 2006/07/08
I used to like the program for it's aggressive and great protection. But then they started adding unnecessary features like everyone else, going for the all-in-one product. Started telling me tracking cookies were spyware..It started blocking web pages I wanted to visit because it felt they were unsafe for me-well I felt that was my decision, and that feature is difficult to bypass- you have to manually enter EACH blocked webpage into an "allowed list" to be able to go it it. That or you have to turn off your protection. I finally sent them a nasty gram, uninstalled the beta and went w/ another product.
Since all major ISP's have AV/Spyware programs built in their mail servers, it's very unlikely that you're going to get a virus via email. They also remove any attachments that have .exe, .inf, extensions- that could execute and hose your system when clicked on. Also yahoo, hotmail, GMail, etc, have this also. And third party software like Outlook, Eudora, Bat,etc., all block suspicious file attachments also.
So what I basically do now is I use a very good AV product/Firewall. When I download a suspicious file, I just right click and scan it with the AV......
I haven't gotten a real virus in a long, long time............
