Hello Forums:
I'm about to purchase a Dell M1330; my question is deciding between the Standard Display and the LED. What are the primary differences, and is the LED really worth the extra 150$?
Thanks.

LED is slimmer and more power efficient.

For an idea of looks........

brighter, more battery efficient, less weight, only reason people buy the m1330

and your notebook fatter

Who said the extra thickness is fat? I say its muscle! GRRR

if you say so LOL

Another post today referred people to an article which claims the Dell WLED screen might not be more energy efficient - however it is brighter and claims better vertical viewing angles.
-
It's not that much of a difference

It probably is more efficient when you turn down the brightness to a level comparable to the standard display. I mean seriously, whoever needs 300 nits of brightness must be blind, or want to go blind. If I stare at a 300 nits screen at full brightness I feel like my eyes are burning. I have to set it at about 15%.

this is correct, they said they used a high number of leds on the screen, so it will be brighter, but no more power efficient
-
That is a good point. At least as long as changing brightness works by changing the power to the lights rather than changing the opacity of the screen.
Reason I mention the latter is that on this D610 I am pretty sure when I turn down the screen brightness the screen dims but any white in the hardware cursor remains just as bright as before (I have ATI X300 graphics). I think that means that it is not really dimming the lights.

I think that is quite possible - but I don't think that article was fully informed. I know that it was an interview with an expert but I don't think he had insider information on the Dell and there is a possibility that the info was wrong. Certainly the statement casting doubt on the relative brightness of the M1330 WLED screen was inaccurate speculation and the article didn't mention the better viewing angles which seem to me to be one of the major selling points if the WLED vs CCFL values listed in the M1330 manual are representative of other CCFL screens. -
Hmmm - another thought. I do use laptops in dark cafes and would like some light on the keyboard. Some IBM Thinkpads have that LED in the screen to illuminate the keyboard - which is nice. And some Macs have illuminated keys.
However - better vertical viewing angles from the M1330 WLED screen might provide more illumination of the keyboard. -
For me the slim LED is the whole purpose of buying the m1330. If not I wouldnt have paid the premium price. I would have just ordered the Inspiron 1420 for less with better specs. To me the LED is what makes the m1330 sexy, without it, its just another notebook.

Totally agree.
