Hi y'all,
I just got an Inspiron 6000 with the following specs:
1.6 (Sonoma)
2x250 DDR2
60G HD
128 ATI X300
24X cdrw
For some reason it tends to work very slowly at times, I mean, sometimes it can take 7-8 seconds to open firefox. I am pretty sure its spyware/virus free.
Any ideas...?

Ahh.. have you reformatted?... Dell bogs your computer with unnecessary crap.. Also you can disable startup program by typing msconfig in the run prompt... Then click startup tab..
I personally think you need more ram also but that's just me. Currently I'm using 300 mbs of ram.. and thats with nortons, this browser, Symantecs firewall, logitech mouse setpoint, spybot tea timer running...
Then of course you can try tweaking stuff and turning down the nice little xp visual things.. that tends to bog down most people.
Other then that I can only suggest reading the threads in I believe mods forum about tweaking your notebook
Oh I just found out the most ie browsers you can have open at one time is 62... then they just stop responding LOL
No slow down in other programs but still they jsut stop responding.. and like task manager doesnt open up case consider like an ie browser/same group same with the start menu...
fun times

Doesn't have enough memory??!...Forgive me, but from my understanding isn't 512MB DDR2 SDRAM kinda like having 768 or 1GIG of DDR??
-
I changed the startup programs to the bare minimun and that made a HUGE difference when I turned on the computer. I'll play around with it and let you know if it still jams up frmo time to time.
Its just frustrating because I thought this would be vey fast. I am about ready to return it and get a Mac (or at least whatever someone else recomends in the 1100 range that would be very snappy for everyday tasks)...
Thanks,
G. -
did u reformat and reinstall?
-
I will, but I only have the disks that reset the computer to its out of the box condition...
Will this do or should I install XP by itself and the add individual drivers (get everything from Dell separately..)?

Hey, All you can do is waht I'm gonna do is this
"LOL, argh, i'll do it.
And regarding the format and fresh install of OS, i think Dell should have included WIN cd that you can use together will all the drivers, if not, then i am pretty sure you can get everything you need of off theur website, if you have any questions hit us up on here.
Gluck.
Cheers."
I just found this in another post which someone mention. ANy how I'm gonna find out if this is true and you can do this too if you like.
Dell added all these crap to make more $$$ by having these stupid sponser which is dumb but you know you gotta do waht you gotta do. Any how Good Luck hehe

When I reformatted the HD (removed the 5 GB recovery partition) and reinstalled XP on my I6000, I noticed the following two things:
1) My XP Pro CD was pre-SP1 and SP2 so the USB 2.0 hardware remained unidentified after the XP installation (I think there'a another thead on here where somebody lists the exact two devices that show up as unidentified). I was able to get everything else working with the drivers that came with the computer (there's a drivers folder on the HD which I backed up to CD). After adding SP2, all devices were correctly recognized and had basic functionality.
2) You'll want to download the following drivers and applications from the Dell website: Dell QuickSet, Intel Mobile Chipset, Dell Notebook System Software, and the X300 Video Drivers. These all were needed to restore full functionality to the notebook, as just updating drivers didn't work for these.
Slooooow I6000
