Slow install times on 1520?

I started installing world of warcraft on my 1520 and with the expansion its taken me well over an hour just to install it all (no patches). Is this normal? I don't remember WoW taking so long to install on my desktop. I've yet to try installing anything else.

 

ditto... it took me like 30-45 minutes to install hl2+steam with my 1520. it has 2gb ram and a 2.2ghz processor btw and i reformatted it.

why does it take so long to defrag? :\
i hate the vista defragging cuz it doesnt tell you the progression

 

WoW took about an hour to install on my desktop, but then again it's over 4 years old...
dunno if it's normal or not =/

 

What RPM does your laptop hard drive have?

 

5400. maybe because my cd/dvd drives read/write speed is 8x and thats the cause of the slow install. lol. i just thought about that.

but iono defragging is taking quite a while

 

slow harddrive.
my desktop's Vista ultimate takes 30-40 seconds to boot up and my laptop's Vista home premium takes 1.5-2 minutes to boot up. CPU wise they are about equal, both have 2gb of RAM. the difference makers was the 7200vs5400RPM HD

 

cursed. i knew i shouldve paid a bit extra for a 7200 but i didnt want my lappy all hot.

its been defraggin for about an hour and 15minutes by now.

 

i have the 7200 RPM... but unfortunately have not had the desire to install anything on it since the audio form headphone port is jacked up...

but i'm sure the RPM speed is what is the reason to your issue...

if it really bothers you, you can just buy another hard drive and install it... i believe you can replace the hard drive since it has instructions on how to do it in the 1520 manual.

 

truthfully i dont even know if its defragging cuz more core 1 and 2 usage is ~2-10% each.
it does say "degragmenting hard disks....
this may take from a few minutes to a few hours"

but its like like xp where it shouls you the progression. throughout my life defragging never took more than 30 minutes

The difference between 5400/7200 is not really that significant. Not 10-20 minutes significant. The difference between SATA 3.0gbps and ATA100 is significant...not 2 sata drives with a 5400/7200.

I can install WoW on my beast of a desktop with a barton 2500+ and a 52x sony 1.5gb ram in WAY less time than that..and voila, I'm running a 5200 rpm hd.

How you compared a slow install of ANYTHING to an HD is beyond me..but ok.

Nodachi if you have a 1520, then your drive isn't a 8X drive. That is the DVD burn speed, if it is on a dvd, then the read speed is 16X which is at DVD speed, which is considerably faster then 16X at CD speed, it equates out to the equiv of around the 40X on a CD drive. I don't remember the exact numbers but it is really fast. If it is on a CD then the read speed is 40X on the dvd-burner, and 48X on the CD/DVD rom combo drive. So it is actually a much faster drive than you think.

i think the hdd might be why my lappy never finishes defragging lol. i analyze and keep it defragging over two hours and it never says it finishes :\ so i end up canceling and redoing it again, and again, and again. after a while i gave up and when to sleep lol

 

I don't know if you care to pay, but the only thing I use is Diskeeper and it is an amazing product. Especially the pro versions have frag shield. Since I started using that my HDDs are rarely ever very fragged, and I can run a manual defrag in about 10-15 minutes due to such low fragmentation. Oh yeah, and you can set it to scheduled defrag so it can do it while you sleep.

 

I don't know why you'd bother defragging a new laptop anyway.

 

because if you keep it defragged then performance would always be top notch, if you wait until it is seriously in need, you will have gone all that time with performance issues you need not have had. Plus what is the first thing you do with your new laptop? Start installing the stuff you want, and uninstalling the things you don't. Thus immediately you start fragmenting the drive.
