Hello,
I'm sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum, but I was just wondering: To all you smokers out there (including myself), if I smoke while I'm using my laptop, is that harmful to the laptop? I'm really sorry if this sounds like a stupid question. The reason is, my girlfriend wants me to stop smoking.
Thank you all.

I am a smoker myself and worry about the same thing. I would say yes, smoking around it isn't good, the fan draws in the smoke, which will cover your electronics inside..ect but hey, the laptop wont last forever.. when I'm at the lappy, I just turn my head to blow the smoke away, not at it..

I think you listen to your girlfriend anyway!

Hi
Iam a smoker i find that i have more of a problem with dust, dog, cat hairs. -
I smoke myself also, but never around the laptop or inside the house. Just hate the smell afterwards. Also, being in IT, I've had the opportunity to work on a smoker's laptop and the laptop acts almost like a sponge. When we first turned the unit on, it blew out air smelling purely of cigarettes. The fans were slightly coated in tar and the intakes were filthy as well. So I would imagine smoking around your laptop isn't the greatest idea, but if you don't care about those things then smoke away.
Your gf has a good point though, maybe a good idea for you to quit and save yourself, your laptop and your gf.. heh. -
Yes the smoke causes dust particles to clog up your system which will cause it to overheat and run alot slower -
Thanks for the post though, it was quite interesting to imagine smoke coming out of the laptop, hehehe. -
Smoking also kills brain cells and causes lung cancer! I smoke too and the laptop is my last concern when it comes to smoking!
-
hahaha good point Bobdare..... aparently smokers here care more about their laptops than their own health/well being.......
-
-
Ditto here, and the smoke will burn out your speakers if they don't clog up your heatsink/fans.
-
Smoking will cause your fans and heatsinks to clog and become less efficient. It can cause your system to run hotter therefore reducing component life over time and causing reduced system performance. The tar buildup will also be difficult to clean out of the system. It probably isn't recommended smoking around your laptop.

.... clogging
... buildup
... difficult to clean out of system.....

I'm a heavy smoker( if you couldnt tell from my picture), and yes, keeping the laptop in a room with a heavy smoke, or smoking a good bit during use isnt the best thing for it, however, a regualr cleaning shedule will negate most if not all ill effects, a good total wipe down two to three times a week, a good blast of compressed air through ALL openings and the keyboard at least once aweek, more the better, and every 6-12 months, open her up for a good thorough internal cleaning, if you let it go with nothing, it'll get funky quick,as little as a month or two, and will be difficult to clean, if you dont let it get bad in the first place, you wont have any problems. The dust in a smokey room gets sticky and gummy if left alone, and can be insanely difficult to clean, so spending about 5 minutes a week can save you hours of fruitless labor down the road. My little Bro NEVER cleans his stuff, and he doesnt even smoke in his room, I spent about 45 minutes cleaning his laptop screen, and finally gave up,its still has a nasty streaky film on it, he pretty much ruined my sony wega HDTV in my living room, I was hospitalized for a few weeks, and during that time he logged many hours inches away from the screen playing Xbobx 360 with a cig hanging out of his mouth, and never once thought to take 30 seconds to wiped down the screen, a few months later I still havent gotten all of it off

I smoke a lot of crack cocaine when I use my laptop. Is it bad for the laptop?

Until recently, lead was added to solder to prevent tin whiskers from growing. Due to the European RoHS directives, most manufacturers are switching to lead-free solder and alloys for electronics components. Tobacco tar and smoke have an especially adverse effect on the new lead-free components and can greatly accelerate the growth of tin whiskers. In the past I have seen computers destroyed after years of tar/dust buildup and clogging around fans and intakes, but lately I've seen a number of newer machines destroyed after only months or even WEEKS of tobacco smoke exposure. A friend of mine lost his almost-new PSU and nearly his whole PC because his wife smoked in the next room, even though they had an air filter running near the PC. When I opened up the PSU, I could see the tin whiskers growing in the areas covered with sticky tar.

wow this sounds more like a horror story......
I can't sleep the nights anymore..... -
