I recieved it yesterday and the new LCD is great(3rd LG screen for me, the other 2 sucked pretty bad though) and very little light leakage so I'm happy. Now I'm supposed to be sending back my old laptop. I was supposed to get a return-shipment sticker of some sort but never got it. The laptop was shipped via Fedex and the only stick I got was a "Door sticker" or something that was left on my doorknob handle.
I haven't recieved any emails or any information at all on how to go about returning the laptop, so it's got me wondering... What if the tech I spoke to when I set this up simply sent me a new laptop and wrote nothing up about returning my current one or maybe there is a flaw in their system.... What if I kept this one for a while, would Dell try to charge me for it, would they simply ask me to return it, or will it be forgotten?
I have no info from Dell on how to go about returning it and I don't feel like wasting more of my time on the phone figuring it out. Maybe if I'm lucky it will even go unnoticed.![]()
What experiences do you guys have with such matters?![]()

You need to be honest and contact them to find out how to send it back. Only after 2 or 3 attempts of them not responding or following up should you give up. Furthermore, there's a 99.9% chance they did not screw up and you'll get in legal hot water if you don't return this.
-
There should be a plastic thing on the box (like a clear plastic envelope or something), and the return info will be in there.
-
they keep track. they contacted me about a power adapter and were threatenin to charge it to my account because I was a few days late shipping it. You can try, but be assured that they will not "forget" about sending you a brand new laptop

if you keep it, you'll pay for it, bottom line, I'd say they already have a pending charge on your credit card, that wont be removed until they recieve the old unit and anything else they replaced
-
I'm guessing you guys are right and I don't feel like dishing out $1400 lol. Guess I'll put more effort into looking for that return-shipping thing when I get off work. ^_^

Metamorphical Good computer user
This is a case of something that's to good to be true. I wouldn't try to keep it, Dell isn't about to let you rip them of. Make sure there is absolutely nothing you have received about shipping the old one back. Then or if not call them. It may take a few times on the phone with Dell to get things done.
Edit: Lol. Good luck Weioo! -
Just like you, Dell sent me my 3rd laptop due to the LCD.
I myself, like you, was wondering how long I could keep it. I had it for about two weeks before I got letters and emails saying they would charge my account if they haven't received it within timely manner.
As much as I hated doing it, I had to send it back. -
Check the box that you received your laptop in. You should have a packing slip that has a return label. If not, you better call dell's tech support and get the label because you will be charged.

I too am awaiting my replacement e1705 due to light leakage and uneven backlighting (seiko-epson screen). D@mn you, boxing stage! At least they are shipping it Next Day...

Dell does screw up big time once in a while. When I ordered an Axim from them last year they sent me a laptop battery with it. That was weird, they never asked me for it back, and I pretty much just forgot about it.

Hi everyone well this is my second laptop from dell to have this problem. I had a 9300 I ended up returning cause the light leak was pretty bad. Does anyone out there know if this only happens to the LG displays? I just confirmed with the tech guy that I had an LG on my new Inspiron 9400/E1705. I had read that the samsung displays do not have this issue but I am not sure those come in the machines now.
Quick question to the guys who got complete laptops who did u end up talking to and how long did it take? The tech guy told me to call the sales team...Did it take a lot of hassle to get a new machine or what?
Here is a shot of my light leak at the bottom btw...
Weioo any chance of getting a screen shot of what your new light leak looks like? If anyone out there wants to see if they have they light leak then can download "Dead Pixel Buddy" turn the screen black while looking at it in the dark and you should be able to see the leak. -
I hate to say this, but i really don't see that much light leakage on your screen. You actually have very minimal light leakage IMO. Normally you see light leakage during boot up times or on a dark screen in a dark room. You won't see this leakage during your normal activities unless you have a black wall paper. I would think that you wouldn't even notice it when watching DVDs.
Yes, the samsung does have light leakage. Most LCDs do have some sort of light leakage, it just varies in degree.
You have a 50/50 shot as to wether the light leakage will be minimal or not. Every screen is different, so unless it bothers you while you are doing your normal activities, I wouldn't try to get it replaced. -

you'd be really lucky to get a display with less leakage than that

Like Southern Girl said look around, I was in the same position as you. My e1705 LCD did not have light leakage it was plain broken, they shipped out thte new system with the return info in a plastic packaging on the side. If not call up the number in the book inside. And speak to the about returns, they will schedule a pick up if they forgot the packaging slip. Believe me they dont forget. Your notebook with the light leakage is going to get repaired and sent out to someone else
Thats why people complain about the light leakage because they ship back out defective systems at times. However Dell has gr8 custumer service and will exchange the system at no cost to you. They have your info and would suck to get charged twice

Hi everyone ok so that image from last night wasn't as true as what I was seeing. The human eye is so much better then a camera. Here is a picture of what the monitor looks like with all the lights out. Notice how is doesn't really appear black anywhere and more of a grey. Is this normal? I should have taken a picture with the dvd in the computer last night for it to be more apparent. The light leak is bothersome for someone like me who works in photoshop alot and mattes images. I would love for someone to take a shot of there screen just as a comparison you know what I mean
To me it just doesn't appear to be 100% black anywhere especially when watching a wide screen movie.

thats a lot better than average, you got a good screen as far as light leak is concerned
-
LOL man what a nightmare so today the dell tech came and replaced my lcd. I have a samsung now...and guess what? Light leak is also present and to boot the samsungs colors are washed out from all over. Wow what a pain in the rear. Forget about viewing the samgsung from a slight angle cause the color is completely washed out. I have the windows blue wall paper and its looks like it got with a big cloud of chalk.
-
well you can try again, but as i stated earlier - chances are that you'll still have light leakage. Dell screens are either average or below average when it comes to screen quality & light leakage. Sony and a few others have the best screens.
If you are really unhappy with it, then call dell and request a replacement. -

LG is the way to go for 17 inch screens...
Not sure whats been better for the E1505
So Dell sent me an entire new laptop to fix my LCD issues...
