I already owned a vostro 1500 but it turned out we needed a second laptop, so we went cheap and bought the 1000. We had a coupon that made it even cheaper, we got practicly the base model, here are the specs
Vista basic
1.7 amd
1 gig ram
basic integrated video card
dvd burner
4 cell battery
Here are the main differences between the 1500/1000
The 1000 is much lighter, it feels like it is made entirely out of plastic, or some cheap composition of plastic. The touch pad buttons are cheaper feeling, the touchpad itself feels cheaper. the keypad feels cheaper and is set up differenlty than the 1500. There is no built in mic or media buttons.
Now I know the 'windows score' is not 100% accurate, but since it is really the only thing we all have to go by here is what windows thinks of AMD processors.
In my 1500 I have the 1.6 intel 800 fsb, my wife has the 1.7 amd 533 fsb. My windows score for processor is 4.7, hers is 4.6, but I don't know if its because I have 2 gigs ram and she only has 1, but there is a hug lag difference between the two. Mine is much more 'snappy'
But although there are short comings and deficiencies, I actually like it. For a cheap budget computer I have no complaints, its light, it feels somewhat durable. With the 4 cell battery I can get about 2 hours of basic use from it, and it seems like a great little computer.
Best part was, from purchasing online to receiving it, it was only 6 days, ordered on tuesday the 21st and got it on Monday the 27th.
If anyone wants pics to compare the two I can post them later,

sure pics would be nice

I would guess the snappiness is due in large to the RAM and possibly the FSB... I am surprised you get that much time out of a 4 cell as I was under the impression AMD chips were pretty power hungry as far as laptops go.
So I bought the vostro 1000....not too shabby
