I just received my brand new Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop today. Once I get it all set up and working the way I want it to I realize that there are 77 processes running on startup! How can I get this number down? It may be a simple answer but I've never had this problem before.

I just got mine today also. I have 68 processes running right now. Once 3dmark is done downloading and testing I'm going to reformat.

If you don't want to reformat and reinstall -- you have one choice: start uninstalling bloatware. I got mine down to around 40 processes at boot. That's with the McAfee security center running.

There is also a dell Decrapifier that will uninstall most of the junkware which you can find info about it here: http://www.yorkspace.com/2006/04/38

Personally, for the best results, I recommend reformatting (guide in link). Whether you format or uninstall, it will be best to optimize your laptop. We have a guide to that in our Dummy Articles forum.

If you reformat remember to boot directly from the cd. You will need to switch the dvd boot order from 4th to 2nd (or just before the hdd). I made that mistake the first time.

Just tap the F12 function key during the boot process, then select your CD/DVD as the boot device. This is a one-time change, and the system will boot with the default device upon reboot.
