Can you load a Windows (or other bootable CD) and see if the laptop BIOS are capable of booting to it? You can use something like a GParted Live CD, or a Linux distro (Ubuntu is one) CD.

I cannot tell if this is a hardware or software problem, but using a live CD ought to tell me which one it is.

You might also want to try this, which is a hotfix for a Vista-related problem in which SATA optical drives just 'disappear.'

and how would i go about doing that?

by the way thanks for the quick reply.

I'm getting sick of this and don't really have the time to spend on it, so i'm seriously considering returning this laptop and getting a latitude or something...especially if this is just the beginning and i will continue to have problems.

I updated the BIOS afte updating the CD drive. Could this have caused the problem?

I'll try updating the CD driver again and hopefully it will still work tommorow.

    Oh, snap. I forgot it's an M1330.

    That's slot-loading....

Ok, do what Greg suggested. Updating the BIOS may indeed have had something to do with it. Just reinstall the driver, and if that doesn't work, see if you can boot into Puppy Linux or something to check if that recognizes it.
