Just noticed, under accessories > TV Tuner and remote control. The last item, Dell Travel Remote Control, is $15, i looked it up and its the same remote some people's came with. I guess they are charging for it now..

Yes the remote is not for free, there is an option for it on the website. The problem is that when the first batch of machines were ordered, the remote control option was not available.
So those people who wanted to order the remote never got a chance. -
Yeah.. After I built my system with the 300 dollar coupon the remote was listed for only 11 dollars. But I don't know if it was ever free on the 1420's. Personally I think they should just make that a standard option. I think most would want it and it really does not effect the price much.

Just go on the Dell website and try to order a 1420. It's there under the accessories tab.

I ordered on July 10th and didn't see the option - but that was probably because I ordered through EEP. Apparently, EEP just never had the option (might have changed now?).
The other problem is that for people who ordered early and called to ask Dell CS about the remote, they were told to "wait until their laptops arrived and see if you get the remote. If not we'll send one". And obviously people didn't get one. -
I thought he meant that it was now available to buy separately.

you can purchase it seperately, it's model number FW331. Apparently that links to a refurbed model, but Stella said hers looked brand new, was still in plastic, and the battery hadn't even been put in. You can also order the bluetooth one, but it is a bit more expensive ($60), Ebay is the best place to pick one of those up, they can be had for more like $30

The back of my remote says "Dell P/N: MR425." You can see if that gets you anywhere with a rep if you are worried about FW331 getting you a refurbished one. I did a search on the website and it was a no go.
So the remote ISN'T supposed to come free
