Is it the Truelife causing this? Glossy Screens? ETC...? I've read through some of the post about this issue, but they seem kinda back-n-forth. Anyone care to inlighten the noob a bit more.
Anyinput would be apprecitaed -Thanks. James

I recently purchased a Inspiron 1501 and a Vostro 1500, both screens are 1280x800 and came with Trulife. Each screen looks amazing both in clarity and in contrast.
The only screen I have that's grainy is a 17" Viewsonic VX-700 and that screen is grainy. Maybe i'm just lucky but I can't complain regrading my Dell screens so i'm batting a 1.000 -
I'm assuming that this is in relation to the inspirons, and the problem seemed to stem from a bad batch of AMO screens with TL glossy coating (whether that was the cause, I don't know)
In any case, it seems to have become a non-issue, as the newly arrived 1520's don't seem to have the problem. -

the glossy coating isnt the cause...cant be
I did some forum searching last night and it seems 1440x900 screens have the worst problem regardless of truelife. I think some hardware is messing up how they are shown, thats why no one has had success merely changing the screen. Its a hardware-resolution interface problem that probably can be fixed with updates in the future. -
The glossy coating was the cause, it depends on the different manufacturers because they use their own coating. The graininess is just a problem inherent to some laptop screen brands/resolutions. They aren't bad screens, they are just badly designed.

it cant be the glossy coating. If anything, the screens they are using with the truelife are the culprit. Maybe Dell can only apply truelife to a specific brand of screen and the screen is the problem. However, I also have the 1200x800 screen and its perfect (with truelife). The higher resolutions are where it gets dicey, but the reason they are grainy is not due to the coating.
-
Dell doesn't apply the truelife though, that is just what they call glossy screens. Its the brand and their coating that they apply on the higher resolution screens that is the problem.

The only option for the WXGA+ screens (1440x900) was TrueLife glossy, and these experienced the most problems although the WUXGA TrueLife and the WXGA TrueLife also experienced graininess problems.
Only the WXGA matte screen (anti-glare) failed to report any graininess issues.
Coincedence? I think not! -
This is my only major concern once I receive my 1520 (expected to be here at the end of the month.) College starts Sept. 1, if the screen is bad, I think it would be a good reason to cry.

sry I know truelife=glossy
I meant to say maybe the screens that they put the truelife coating on is the problem, not the coating itself. I.E. the screen they use when someone wants truelife is cheap, but the truelife coating itself isnt the reason for graininess. And I have the WXGA with truelife and its fine, thats why I say it must be the screen itself (or how the computer is displaying the resolution) thats the problem. -
Think about how it diffuses reflected light.
It would also diffuse any "graininess" that would be obvious on the clear, Tru-Life screen. -
So the truelife screens are indeed the glossy screens?
The dell I have now (an aging 8600 inspirion) has a non glossy screen & tell ya the truth I prefer it to the glossy. I don't really like the reflections.
Is "Truelife" another name for glossy. Or is it brighter or what?
from this thread it seems the resolution is the culprit??? -
When I got my notebook with truelife it made my desktop LCD look grainy so I doubt it's truelife.

From the Dell site:

I used to think everyone was crazy about these grainy screens. Yesterday I went into a Best Buy and saw two Asus G1s, both with glossy SWXGA+ screens. One was SEC (Samsung) and the other CMO (Cho Mei(?). The SEC was clearly grainy, whites were filthy and completely unacceptable. The CMO was crystal clear, whites were virginal, and it was like looking into the face of God. It is luck of the draw which manu. you get but at least I know what to look for. I will not settle for grainy when I get my 1400. Just in case, I ordered a 1420 as well.
So what's the verdict on the Grainy Screens?
