A friend of mine got this computer and there's tons of software installed (supposedly).. This is all new to me ..
When I open up Microsoft Office it's asking me for the serial # but there were no discs for Office in the box.. Is this telling me that he didn't purchase it with the computer?..
I never purchased a new computer and I can't figure out what are real programs installed and what they want you to buy...
It did come with Microsoft Works 8.5 but as I have been reading different things it's telling me that Works doesn't come with Word.. True?
Same with the Antivirus.. it wants a serial key.. (which I don't have) or install the trial version that lasts for 5 days..
Can someone help me out with this.. Any help would be appreciated..
    Thanks

MS Word is one of the applications in MS office. Office doesn't come free on a Dell, but you can buy it as an upgrade I think. Regardless of whether you buy it or not, you'll have a shortcut for Office because they give you a 60 day trial or something.

Works is a lighter office suite, it does have a word processor but a simpler one than MS Word. Works comes for free on a Dell.

In your friends case, he has Works because it came with the computer.. he doesn't have Word because he doesn't have Office (but he can get a free trial). If your friend needs an office suite but doesn't want to buy MS Office have him check out openoffice.org instead.

Your best bet is to reformat the drive and do a clean install of windows
