    :) :)

As far as I know this is the first thread focusing on a real solution to this issue.

The solution to the problem that occurs when your LCD screen wont turn off when you close your lid:

If you have an nVidia graphics card like me, the solution is very simple:

    1) Run services.msc from your start menu
    2) Find NVIDIA Display Driver Service and double-click it.
    3) Set the service startup type to Automatic and Start the service
    4) Close your monitor and enjoy longer battery life ;)

~Replace step 2 with the service that represents your graphics card manufacturer if you don't use nVidia. ATI, etc all have services like this.

To determine your card manufacturer, right click on My Computer, go to Properties, Hardware tab, device manager, display adapters. The manufacturer is listed here.

For those of you who want to turn off your LCD without closing the lid

    1. download monitoroff.exe from here
    2. run this program to turn off the monitor (drag to quick launch bar or assign to a HotKey to access it faster)

Let me know if this helps and don't hesitate to give me rep
    :)

One thing the dell lacks that the thinkpad has is the ability to kill the screen. I like to kill my screen (s) at night when I'm sleeping without closing the laptop.

You mean as a physical button to press, because you could configure Windows to kill the screen after a set time of idle without closing the lid through Power Options?

power options aren't the idea here, because they don't instantly turn off your monitor. see my original post on how to create a quick launch button to do this.

Tried this but the service was already started and set to Automatic. When I close the lid of course the screen doesn't turn off.

I have XP on a Vostro 1500. Damn.

Doesn't work on neither, I have a vostro 1500 as well. First option is as said by above poster, and second option makes the screen flicker and unresponsive to deactivate.
