    Hi,

I have recently purchased a Dell Studio 14 laptop with Western Digital WD3200BEVT 320 GB 5400 rpm HDD. I installed Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10 immediately after purchasing it.

I am aware of the Load_cycle_count issue and would like to fix it. But with so many threads on the topic available on the net, I am a bit confused.

Has anyone applied the fix on the Studio Laptop with the above HDD yet? If yes, can anyone please share their experiences/caveats etc. so that I can confidently go ahead and apply the fix?

The fix as I understand lies in setting the correct parameters to hdparm, which is again dependent on the HDD and how it 'measures-up' after applying.

Are there any rule of thumb values for the -B value to be given to hdparm in this case? Should it be 254? Or 200 ?

    Please advise.

    Thanks in advance,

    regards,
    Seemanta

P.S. I already checked my HDD specs and it seems to be rated for 600,000 load cycles. I was a bit scared that it might turn out to be only 60,000 as it happened for one user in one of the forums I visited. It was a Samsung HDD !

P.P.S. I did search in this forum about this issue before posting but it seems that no one has put the fix over Intrepid and on a Studio 14 laptop before. So I just wanted to confirm once before pluging right in :D

    (off topic)
    lol that was me.
    [obligatory] update:
    6780 hours
    17792 cycles
also, I believe now that my model is rated for 600,000 as the specifications for the same model with SATA interface (and as with most other drives) is rated for 600,000.
