    Hi, I just found this out, and I apologize if it's old news. But if you have an Inspiron 6000, and probably many other laptops, if you hold down the Fn key and press the up arrow, it will make the screen brighter. Thanks, Nick

    The screen dims automatically on battery to conserve power, and its a pretty significant amount, you can usually control this behavoir in the bios.

    Likewise if you control the brightness using the Fn+Up/Down keys it gets setup in the bios to the last set brightness for each mode. So if you were on battery and dimmed it to level 5 then the bios remembers it and has it go to that mode the next time you run on battery. The same thing happens for AC mode. The bios keeps a separate setting for each one.
