I have one of the Sony burners in my i6000 and this thing is LOUD, we're talking obnoxious, shaking the table, disturbing the peace around me when i'm working in a public place loud. Any chance i could call up dell and have them send me a new one, or would they just send me another Sony?

What's the model of your drive? I installed a Sony DW-D56A in my Sager, and it is fairly quiet. Not as quiet as NEC drives though.

There's a good chance you won't get the same drive; it's not like they use one manufacturer for every optical drive.

Most Sony slim drives are rebadged Lite-Ons. So don't get a Lite-On if you want to receive a more quiet drive. I've heard great things about the NEC ND-6750A. I'd probably get that one to replace your Sony. I have a Philips CDRW/DVD slim combo in my E1405 and it is very loud and rattles inside my laptop when I type hard. :(
