Well, I just recieved my logitech G7 today. Unfortunately, I can't install the software for it on my XPS. For some reason, it burns fine, and reads data disks just fine, but it won't read this disk, or a few others I have tried. But some, it has no problem with.I have the latest drivers for it, I already had them installed, but I flashed it again just to see if that would solve the problem. It didn't. Now I am on hold for the next half an hour with Dell, because it looks to me like I need a new drive. I figured I'd come on here and see if any of you guys had some clue as to what I should do. Any suggestions??

The sony's are lemons apparently. There have been several problems with it.

Yeah, just did a nice little google search. Fortunately, after waiting on hold for 20 minutes, I was sent to someone else, who put me on hold for 20 minutes, and then doing all kinds of useless crap to my computer, I did get them to ship me the NEC drive
It was annoying, but they were overall pretty nice, so I guess I can't complain too much for my first expereince with Dell customer service. He said it should be here Wednesday too, so that's pretty nice!! -
Just got my new drive in, I've gotta hand it to Dell, that was the fastest delivery I've ever recieved!! New drive works great. For those of you with the Sony drives, I'd be wary while you're still under warranty. It seems mine would run just about anything, except Logitech software. I tried loading two different Logitech drivers, both for my mouse, and for a controller I have, and neither would work. Really weird, and a google search showed quite a few others had the same problem.
Anyway, just thought I'd share my experience. Can't believe Dell put that junk in the computer in the first place, but at least they were good about exchanging it out -
I might just have to do that. How fast can your burn with the NEC. All I can out of my Sony is 4x on most disk.

Thats really wierd that it won't read that logitech software. Did you try any other software other then logitech software? I have a sony dvd burner in my XPS M140. I should make sure everything works fine. It's quite strange how dell does things. A friend of mine has the exact same laptop as me. He has a Segate HD and I have a Fijutsu. He has a NEC DVD burner, and I have a Sony. Why can't dell just use all the same parts? I guess they have too many machines to build, and one company doesn't have the supply capacity to support such a large company like dell.

I too have the junk sony drive and the new MS One Care doesn't seem to even realize it is there.

Even though my works mostly, I'm going to get on dell chat tonight and request a new nec drive. I am good hearted and all, but is that bad/greedy for a new drive? Comments please

i got the sony too and it sounds really weird i've burned a cd with it but wasn't in the room to hear it then......it seems to run the few cd's i've put in so far so i guess i'll hold out i do have 3 years so when it goes i'll get one the next day......unless you all think i should go for it right away. MAN I LOVE MY E1705

My sony drive was making a wierd clicking noise the other day. It has only done this when I put in an old and scrated CD. The other CD's I have tried have worked fine. I wan't a good working drive. I want the NEC!
-
I have the nec, and want the sony. NEC wont install chronicles of riddick. Gives a crc error.
-
Well, let's see. It was pretty much just the logitech, as far as software is concerned. But it would only load up the main screen on the DVD I put in, it wouldn't play the actual movie. Plus, the other day I burnt a CD, and it skips all the time. I thought maybe it was just a software problem with Nero, but when I googled the drive, I found other people that had that problem when they burnt CDs/DVDs with my specific Sony drive.
Basically, everyone seemed to agree the NEC drives are the way to go. Now Alpha says he has a problem with his NEC, but that could very well just be his specific drive, as opposed to all the forums/threads I found discussing the poorly working Sony drives.
So ccbr01, I wouldn't consider it greedy to want to get rid of that thing. I actually tried TWO logitech CDs, on was for a controller. It didn't work either, but it DID work when I first installed it a few months ago. So mine just stopped reading certain CDs, and that's exactly what seems to be happening to alot of people. I would want nothing to do with a Sony DVD burner
/happy with my NEC -
Great now my Sony DVD-RW isn't playing anything CD's or DVD's. EHHHHHHH I just popped the DVD in about an hour ago and it worked I take it out and put it back in a little while later and it won't play then try any other cd/dvd I can find
I guess time for me to get NEC

has anyone been able to request an NEC drive from Dell yet? I'm just curious on how dell is handling this issue.
-
Well Dell has always been great to me on replacements so I'm sure they'll do good with this issue.
