My friend has an Dell Inspiron 6000 with a SONY DVD+-RW DW-D56A (for the CD/DVD burner).

It can burn CDs perfectly fine but gives me an error when I try to burn a DVD. I have no idea what the problem would be, so any help would be appreciated.

lol. That's EXACTLY what happened on my dell E1505. Just ask the tech support for a replacement and specify that u want a NEC or philips.

sony drives don't last longer than 2 months...horrible.

I burn about 30 cds or dvds now, I haven't have a problem with SOny burner yet. Even though the Sony slim i bought from Newegg can't burn Dvds after 5 months of using, it. I'll pay more attention to the burner. Thanks for posting this issue.

I have one of the sony drives and have not had any problems yet. NEC drive users seem to have less complaints. Sony has really hurt their name with the battery recall and bad dvd drives.

Ummm...sorry to burst your anti-Sony bubble, but the drive is a rebranded LiteOn SOSW-852S. This means...it's not a Sony. Try some of the LiteOn firmwares at the bottom of this page.

NEC and Sony recently merged their optical drive divisions. :p
