I hope this is a simple question. When i used to turn up and down the volume on my 700m it would show up on the screen with bars across to show how high it was. but it no longer does that. does anyone know how to get that back on?

Have you reinstalled the OS recently? If so download Quickset again.
-
like Oscarine says, you need Quickset to be running in the background to get the display and volume on-screen meters as well as all of your Fn+X functionality. if you haven't uninstalled it or reformatted your machine, then you probably turned it off. make sure Quickset is installed and turned on.

Just to add to what Oscarine and Drumfu said, if you need to redownload it, you can find it on Dell's downloads and drivers. Enter your system information in, and it will be listed under applications on the Driver's page.

all the fn-x stuff still worksand i cant find that program to download anywhere, how would i got about turning it back on if it is just turned off

Apparently the 700m BIOS isn't compatible with Quickset program which is what most of the Inspiron users have, so that's why we suggested it. If you had the sound indicator before, can you remember editing any settings? I would guess that this would be in the BIOS since the 700m supposedly doesn't require any additional software for these features. You might also check your sound/volume settings in the control panel.
Another suggest that was given on Dell's forum is to download another program that will give you the volume indicators. Here is the thread related to that: http://forum.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=insp_power&message.id=34863 -
ya i am not sure i tried installing that program quickset and it didnt install, ya i looked at the forum and konfabulator is a huge resource hog, looks like ill probably be without it then

I would just google around. For me, I use desktop sidebar (which uses little resources), and it has a volume indicator on it. Plus you can configure it where it has a battery indicator. I used to have this program which was similar to desktop sidebar, but it had a bar above my taskbar that had indicators for volume, memory, and bunch of other stuff.

ok ill just keep looking around, thanks for the help if i find an answer i will post it up here
