    Hello,
I am wondering if anyone has recently replaced an Insperion e1705(or another machine with similar specs to the ones listed below) through dell and what the replacement system was. Also how long did it take you to receive the new machine?

    Old laptop Specs:
    17ich (1900*1200)wuxga screen
    256 7900go Nvidia graphics
    1g ram
    windows xp
    100gb 7200rpm harddrive
    T7200 2.0gb core2due processor

    Thanks for any input

For those specs, I'd say the closest they will be able to give you is a refurbed XPS M1730, simply because no other current 17" models can match the graphics.

I just checked dell's outlet site and there were no m1730's in stock. Does anyone know if this is the same inventory that dell uses for there replacements?

In that case, it's hard to say. I know someone who recently got an M1730 as a replacement for an Inspiron 1720...maybe a Studio 17 would be possible, if you don't mind the slightly weaker graphics (ATi 3650). It's really hard to say for sure.

Dell might just build you a new 1730, if I had to guess....

Thanks for the link. The only option I see missing in the possible configurations that my old laptop had was a N-wireless card instead of the a/b/g wireless card. I wonder if I will have to live without the N-wireless card even though I have a N-wireless router

You can always buy an N-wireless card from eBay for $20 and install it yourself. It's a pretty simple procedure.

Not trying to be cheap or anything,(though i am a broke college student), but if Dell claims that they will send you a system with the same or better specs as a replacement, I feel thats what I should get. Worst comes to worst I would buy a wireless N card but I feel like thats money they should spend not me. Anyways this is all more speculation. They could send me my EXACT same system e1705 for all i know so we will see. hopefully not though :)

That's theoretically true, but if they simply don't have that hardware configuration, there's not much they can do. Although if you get an M1730 to replace an E1705, then I would consider it a pretty solid upgrade anyway. :p

Is it normal for it to take 12-16 days to receive a replacement laptop? Should I contact dell or just wait it out?

My roommate actually had a E1705 replaced with a Studio 17 about a month ago, after having them try to replace the MB 3 times the the display once, and the power adapter once. I also recently got my M1210 replaced with a XPS 13 even though they have plenty of M1330....to be honest I would have prefered the M1330 lol.

I can also say that performance wise it was actually still on the par (core duo almost same speed, similar graphics card, what was high end in the system he used to have is low end in the computer he received by today's standards) with the system he had before but it's nice to have a shiny new computer with no issues that looks pretty.

It took me about three weeks to get my replacement Studio 1555 for my old 1535. These things take time.

So you had to ship your laptop back before you received the new one?

I was sent a refurbished M1730 as a replacement for my e1705, it took about 2 weeks get it. When I received it however it was broken right out of the box (screen distortion/artifacts, green lines etc.) and I am currently going through hell trying to get dell to do something about it.

When did dell first tell you you were getting a replacement? And did they give you any updates or did you just wait and one day the laptop was at your front door?

What does everyone think about receiving an m1730 as a replacement to an e1705? I understand that spec wise it is equal/greater than the e1705 but when I ordered my e1705 i specifically did not order a gaming machine. In my eyes the m1730 is just hideous and extremely flashy. I believe I should receive a machine that is more professional like my original e1705. Dell is shipping me an m1730 but i honestly do not think it is the proper replacement coming from the e1705. Does anyone think dell will listen to my case? Does anyone agree with me?

Imagine if I use this laptop for business and I have to show it to clients. An M1730 would be a major turn off in my opinion.

    @knlmwq:

I'm sure if you contact support and provide your last case number (the one which resulted in the replacement) you should be able to speak with someone (request a supervisor). As a rule of thumb, as soon as you receive any replacement/order/warranty part/etc. from Dell and it is damaged, you should be on the phone with them immediately asking for assistance - before the call ends, make sure you get it.

As for a comparable unit, what did you have in mind? Studio XPS? I doubt they will consider a Precision.

If after you speak with someone and find yourself still hitting a brick wall, use the Unresolved Issues link on the Dell Main page and request in the form a call back from a supervisor. Include your case#.

    Hope it works out.

I believe a Studio XPS would be a comparable unit except that it is not 17inches. The problem with the Studio 17 is that it has a lesser graphics card. I believe that a precision or vostro 1720 is more of a apples to apples replacement to an e1705. Honestly I would rather have an alienware if they are forcing me to get a gaming laptop. They are both ugly and clearly not ment to carry around for business purposes but the alienware is at least simply black minus that little alien guy on the back.

Yes, in the case of myself and my roommate we both had to ship our computers back before receiving the new one. Also I would press to ask details regarding the new system and would be told the system is in "building stages" which I think is probably very unlikely, I think they ship out a refurb return or such. My roommates GFX card was a downgrade by comparison to what he had before. My computer was an upgrade but I hate the horrible screen on the XPS13. I would have asked for an M1330 but I doubt they would have complied with system requests.
