My friend's Acer laptop has the ability to split her screen into 4 quarters, enabling her to run software in each window, so she can easily work between the different windows, ie have Media player in one quarter, msn in another, etc.

Is there any software than will enable me to do this on my Dell 6400, as her Acer seems to have its own Acer software.

Nope it's not that, this is defined sections of the screen with black lines between them, effectivly creating four mini screens, each independant.

Why not ask your friend since she is able to do it?

You can use Dexpot. It doesn't put all four windows up at the same time (which seems like a huge waste of the screen anyway), but you can configure up to 20 separate workspaces and switch between them using hotkeys or the Desktop Manager. If you've ever used Linux, you'll definitely like using this utility to manage your workspaces. I'm very satisfied with it. Plus, it's completely free!

If your friend is using an nvidia graphics card, the drivers come with nview desktop manager. There is an option for gridlines which splits the screen like you are describing. All you do is set where you want the gridlines, you can set as many as you want. To use it, just drag windows into that area and maximize them. The windows will automatically maximize into that designated grid area.

nvidia drivers rock... damn ati and their lazyness
