I was just curious as to how everyone who owns a studio 17 with the standard 1440x900 likes it. How have you adjusted the brightness to suite your visual needs? How do you like it? Thanks for any feedback.

I got my Studio 17 two days ago. The screen's generally okay, bright, clear, quite shiny. I'd change the brightness and contrast settings but I don't know how as it's my first laptop and not a monitor with onscreen controls. :)

But the thing that makes me hate the screen is its extremely narrow vertical viewing angle. It's either washed out at the bottom or looks like a negative at the top. If I move my head two inches up or down, the colours change! There's no way I can watch a DVD on it.

I called Tech Support and it doesn't seem to be a hardware problem. So I said I wanted to return it but they're getting an engineer round to replace the screen. If that doesn't fix it, I'll return it but Dell said I'd have to pay a fee to have it collected, probably £20! Is that normal?

How can we get onscreen controls like Inspirons?

Yes. All laptops will have fairly narrow viewing angles. Most reviews will mention this fact... Did you read any laptop reviews before buying a laptop?

The narrow viewing angle isn't the problem, it's not being able to find one angle where the whole screen looks okay. The best I've found is where the colours in the middle half is fine but the top quarter is negative and the bottom quarter is washed out.

Has anyone else experienced this? Or are all laptops like this? If so, looks like I'll have to get a desktop instead of a desktop replacement laptop.

You are getting a color shift.
I have bad news for you..........its the screen type used in most notebook computers which is the TN type. It is the same on regular LCD screens.
You would have to find a IPS type screen or MVA/PVA type screen which most manufacturers dont use anymore because they are expensive.
There are some older notebooks with these screens. IBM and Fujitsu made some. Do a search and you will see what I am talking about.
