Startup trouble: It basically starts up great but right after the welcome screen it goes into some all grey screen where the mouse is active and you can see the buildversion information in the lower right corner. It will stay there for 20 seconds or so before moving on. Does anybody have any idea what this is?

hmm so it hangs in that part ?? then try booting into safemode and check for any startup programs which may create these issues

How do I find out what is causing the troubles in safemode?

Argh! Now my screen driver stops working for a few seconds on this computer!

Trail and Error Method bro , just disabling recently added Drivers / Service / Auto-Start Apps and see if its booting bro

and for Screen Driver issue try removing the old driver completely using any driver cleaner software and then install a new one from laptopvideo2go.com bro :D
