When ordering my XPS2 yesterday I got charged Pennsylvania State Tax of 6%. This completely negated my EPP student discount and no other site has ever charged me tax on an internet order. PA does not require online retailers to charge tax on orders. I've personally ordered things from HpShopping.com, Newegg.com, and PcConnection.com to name a few and mever been charged tax. Given the fact that this is $150 and I'm already way overbudget I'm pretty pissed off right now.

Has anyone ever tried or had luck in making Dell remove the taxes? I will not pay taxes for something I'm not legally required to pay taxes on. I'm still awaiting Dell to give me an answer on removing the taxes.

Also, I wasn't able to get any of those Dell coupons to work on the XPS2. Every discount is pretty important to me right now. Anyone know if there is a coupon or other thing that could drop the price?

you cannot combine coupons with your student discount usually the only discount that can be added to a student one is a promotional discount like when everything was 20-25% off.

good luck getting them to wave the tax I went through an argument with dell about this for almost a month and still ended up having to pay the tax. I also live in PA.

    Thanks.

Yeah, I'm trying to get around it. Because Dell has stores in PA I will get charged PA sales tax. However, now I'm trying to divert the shipment to Maryland where I don't have to pay sales tax. BUT, the EPP site charges sales tax in Maryland while the Home site does not...wtf? There are no taxes in internet taxes in Maryland, Period. Dell does not have stores there. Dell shouldn't be charging them on EPP purchases. So I sent an email to customer care because I can't figure out why they're charging EPP tax in Maryland and I want my shipment changed to get out of paying $150 sales tax.

I'm not rich. This is already quite a lot more than I wanted to spend. [ :p]

Yeah, that's what I'm seeing. I'm trying to figure out why that is. I can't find an explanation on Dell's site or even through Google right now.

It's not like I'm going to cancell, but I want to make sure I'm getting a good deal. My last laptop had a pretty bad heat management problem.

any company that has a presence in any state is required to charge state sales tax on an item shipped to that state. if you've never been charged state sales tax on an internet order before, it's because you've never purchased from a site that has a presence in your state. it's not something that dell can just waive, to do so would be illegal. if sales tax puts you over budget, you can try ditching something specwise (like RAM or HD) which you can upgrade later or try to wiggle some kind of discount to offset the sales tax.

I think it is related to the service contracts Dell has in each state. Some states they charge tax, others they do not. There is a post over in Dell'd forums related to this issue.

Dell may not collect the tax for certain states they do not have a presense in but many states still want the taxes paid. There is a line on some state tax returns for the payment of use taxes. This has become more common in recent years probably due to all the internet purchases being made. CO and NY are two such states that come to mind.
