I'm experiencing the same problem with my Dell XPS M1530.

No problem when speakers are attached, but when I plug in earphones (tried 2 models with the same result) static is heard even when the sound is turned to 0 on the computer.

Sounds like the jacks are not well grounded. Does it get worse when your using the touchpad while headphones are connected?

    No better, no worse.

The static is not affected by the volume either. I have tried putting it to max without noticing any change in the static.

Calling a tech over this issue will not resolve anything. You M1530 owners will just have to rip open you're machines and do some hacking yourself like I did with my 1520 to resolve the issue.

I also had this problem they sent over a replacement mother board, it did nothing. It actually made my speakers worse; i can't hear anything now. So now i'm getting a new laptop shipped to me. You will probably have to call dell and ask for a replacement. fudge wtf is wrong with dell.

I have contacted Dell XPS support today. According to them the motherboard has to be replaced so they are coming in two days to replace it :)

Good luck man.... You are opening up a whole can of worms with your inquiry. The 1530 also suffers from the exact same "20 seconds before the end of the song" problem than the Inspiron 1520's had when using Windows Media Player. Look around on this website and you wil see hundreds of posts with regards to Dell audio issues, for which there are many great solutions/suggestions. The people at Dell customer service wil only be able to help you with moderate adjustments such as "Audio Enhancements"... Dell will not even admit that there are any audio issues. All the best to you !!!
