Didn’t any of you guys look at a real 17” before placing the order ?
Even by definition 17” is not a notebook. It is simply a desktop replacement.

Seriously these 17 inch notebooks are huge. Go take a look at local stores for some of the 17 inch models from other manufacturers. Pick them up and hold them for a bit (do not just look at them in those laptop displays where they are bolted down). If you ever plan to travel with them more than a couple of times, you may quickly find that you like something closer to a 14 inch screen :)

What is the matter with you? Do you have some type of disorder you should disclaimer in the beginning of your post? 1 17" is not a 17" notebook?..WTF did that even mean guy? What is a desktop replacement? ITS A NOTEBOOK THAT HAS A KEYPAD..

rofl you dont know what you're talking about. Thats the problem with this board..there are people here who know what they are typing before they do. The mods here are like dell reps..I hate to love them. but i have to.

You have to simply NOT be all there if a 17" LAPTOP/NOTEBOOK is not a "notebook" to YOU lol. So..if its not a notebook..what is it? a desktop? a desktop REPLACEMENT IN THE FORM OF A PORTABLE LAPTOP COMPUTER? A 2 inch bigger NOTEBOOK with a KEYPAD? the ignorance on this board. my christ.

eh i wouldn't call it ignorance; it's a matter of personal preference. also, stop getting mad at everybody and people will stop picking on you...at least, they'll stop doing it intentionally.

also, you don't have to post here if we're all stupid.

Who is "picking" on me? How is a 17" notebook NOT a notebook? how does calling a 17" notebook NOT a notebook make that personal preference?

No one is making any sense here..

How come I have to click on "notebooks" to get to my 17" LAPTOP? the world may never know since its not really a laptop..right?

remember your intel vs amd thread? the one about the 1721 you're ordering?

obviously a 17" notebook is physically a notebook. that's why it's called a notebook. to some people, it is just so large that it doesn't meet their own personal definition of what constitutes a laptop. no big deal...people are different. i personally wouldn't order a notebook with a screen larger than 15.4".

grr lynus it's people like you who keep me addicted to checking my status  hope you get it soon!

I personally did order a notebook with a screen larger than 15.4" and no regrets so far, i have a friend who got a 1505 and thought i was going overboard with the 1720 but i think the 1720 will be perfect! :D

lol that's good for you...i just don't know if i'd want to carry a 17" notebook in my backpack all day in college...though i think for that sort of thing even 15.4" is stretching it...but I want an 8600m gt lol.

Ok..I understand people can say "oh yeah..thats too big, I wouldn't carry that, I don't consider that a notebook"..but don't say "it's not even a notebook" when that is complete and udder nonsense.

    Physically..it's a laptop. Personally? its..you guessed it..still a laptop.

and by the way..the only people "making fun" of me for the AMD/intel thread are people who have no REAL idea..hop on a bandwagon, and ride it all the way to ignorance. I love seeing people make CLAIMS about intel being superior..keeps me warm and fuzzy inside.

Why are you so worked up about what I said? I was just making a casual comment. If you don’t know what I mean please have a look at these:

    Notebook : ( www.Dictionary.com)

    Desktop replacement (Wikiedia)

    Desktop Replacements ( CNet reviews)

You don't know what a desktop replacement is nor the actual definition of a notebook... but still call me ignorant

    Yep..you are ignorant, sir.

*pulled from my PC Magazine ad*

"The DELL XPS M1710 continues to be the best NOTEBOOK on the market"

The fact remains that WHETHER or not its a desktop replacement or a notebook..which is retarded because they mean the same thing..its STILL a notebook. Your initial post said that a 17" notebook is NOT a notebook.

Thanks guys. this is the best free entertainment I've had yet today (ooh, that's kinda pathetic ain't it).

I have a 1720 LAPTOP specifically because I wanted a DESKTOP REPLACEMENT because it has a fantastic large display (or should I say LCD, screen, WXGA monitor??), is quite a bit more upgradeable (or should I say it's built with 'expansion capacity') than other laptops I've owned and has a full sized keyboard just like my desktop.

Everything I have in my desktop, but it's ALSO portable. BEST of both worlds!

It is a pure joy to use. Now if I could only get the damn remote, I would be in nirvana!

Maybe I can get with you on Aim..and we can cross reference our OPINIONS on our new 17" laptops..then throw seperate benchs for the 20 and the 21 with emphasis on the different processors we have obviously. Basically, throw the 20/21 side by side and do a full blown review of both. just a thought.

you got the 2.0, i got the 1.8..otherwise your vid card is better and they are the same notebooks. So we put our opinions on build and such on the table, and make 1, very informing, mixed or matched opinion review up for everyone.

That sounds like a good possibility, the only difference in the power of ours is that I have a 2 GHz 800 FSB and 4Mb Cache and yours is 1.8 Ghz with a 667 FSB and 2MB if I'mnot mistaken

Send me a remote and I'll post anything you want- :D

One other thing for those who have yet to get theirs delivered, I was a bit surprised how dark the color was once I got it. Not in a bad way at all, but the midnight blue is just that- a very dark blue. In fact when I took it out of the box, I thought they sent me a black one. The brown is also reeally dark, borderline blackish.

The next thing that struck me (and you hopefully) is that this is a very solidly built machine. Even without starting it up, I found it to be sturdy and firmly built.

It's too bad we have to put up with the abysmal customer service issues with Dell which can easily take away from what is otherwise a fantastic lappy- especially for the price!

I spent $1,015 precisely..with no special coupon deals or EPP or anything like that. Final price after $130 off=885. I'd say I got a KILLLER deal for what I got. Which is why our benches will show for the money who's getting what.

I know your vista index and all that will dominate mine because the vid card and whatnot, but we really don't know till we KNOW. especially since no one has a 1721 that we know of for those benches.

Ok, I'm going to try a rough translation of the "Like / Do Not Like" in the French review. Note: they got the 1920x1200 screen, 2.4ghz processor, 4gb ram, and replaced the included hard drives with 7200rpm ones.

    PCmark05: 5555
    3dmark06: 2946
    3dmark06 after tweaking: 3019

    Good:
    -Powerful Processor
    -Clarity and Resolution are amazing
    -Ease of accessing internal components
    -Quiet operation
    -Good reinstallation CD's provided
    -2mp webcam is a 'marvel'

    Bad:
-Eternal problems with Dell's video driver optimization
    -The price

Anyone have the review yet? I'm wondering if I should buy this or not. 1 thing, I've seen many pictures with the battery sticking out of the back. Why is that? I would hate to buy it and have to live with that, it just annoys me. THanks

The battery that sticks out is the 9 cell battery. I opted for the standard because I really don't need more than a few hours of "off AC" life. My laptop should be arriving anyday this week. It did not ship next day like Dell had said, so it's expected anyday this week, last day being Friday. I will have a review up that day, a few hours after I receive it.

HAHA But I will post overclocking 3dmark06 1280x1024 respectively because I want to compare it if someone have a 1720 with oc'ing there gpu.

later, have my finger cross tomorrow is delivering to my house :D :D ;)

on the 17", the 6 cell will probably give you 2 hours..3 max doing minimal intensive stuff. The 6 cell is flush with the back of the laptop and doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. I don't like that look, and I didn't need it either.

Hmm, my friend's e1705 has the 9 cell and it doesn't stick out. His laptop has the Go 7900 GS. With the 9 cell his laptop gets close to 3 hours doing normal usage. It also doesn't stick out. I really want the 15", but I also heard the battery sticks out as well. Does the 9 cell stick out of the 15", what about the 6 cell? If the 6 cell battery TRULY gives at least 2.5 hours then it's cool. I dunno, i'm just tempted to go with the HP dv9500t.
