Hi all,i have a dell laptop inspiron I installed a new hard drive and inserted windows XP disc, not dell disc as i do not have this.
Makes loads of noises and starts to load all the stuff,it gets to the stage where set up is starting windows then screen goes blue with stop message
stop : 0x0000007e (0xc000005,0xf85480bf,0xf8994208,0xf8993f08).
Thats it
I am now thinking that the new hitachi hdd may be faulty as when i tried to load windows onto it via the packard bell laptop it could not access the hdd,yet it knew it was 40gb well 38155 mb,it said disk0 at id0 on bus 0.
From there i pressed enter to load and a blue screen with a simular stop code occured.
Any advice welcolmed.

What model Inspiron do you have?
Did you install Windows? It sounds like the "new" drive you have is actually used, and you aren't actually booting off of the CD to install Windows cleanly. A STOP error like you're saying is usually from an already installed copy of Windows failing to start up since it's been transplanted from one machine to another. Check your BIOS settings, make sure it's set to boot off the CD first (usually F2 at startup with Dells). And you have to hit a key when it's booting "Hit any key to start from CD..." message or something similar should be displayed. -
It is a 630,i bought the hdd brand new packaged and sealed.to replace a physically damaged drive in the dell.
-
What kind of XP disc are you using? Is it retail or OEM? Regular version or Upgrade version?
-
Regular XP professional, about a year old version,i normally load service pack2 on after.
I tried to put them on one cd but it is 997mb big,i ant that clever. -
I had the same problem on my old M140...Southern Girl helped me out that time. You need an SP2 Windows XP disc for it to work.
-
I do not understand that as on a regular basis reload xp prof on my home pc with absolutely no problems and load service pack 2 afterwards.
All i want to do is load it onto a brand new hdd on my dell laptop,it also works on the packard bell ok.
I did manage to amalgamate the 2 pieces of software into one but like i said it would not fit onto a cd,i would imagine there is a way of compressing the data to fit but i do not know how.
Would anyone here have a spare working hdd they want to sell, size not too important, just need to know that it works. The people that i bought the hdd from have offered me a refund on the basis that if they find it faulty, but that may take a few weeks. -
Your HDD might be fine. I can't remember all of the specifics with it, but some users before had problems with XP SP1 trying to install due to some hardware conflicts (might be the express card?).
Anyways, my suggestion is to call Dell's tech support. Tell them that you bought a new HDD and need the XP disc. They will send it to you free of charge and within 2 business days. This will give you a clean install.
If that disc gives you problems, then most likely it is the HDD. -
Thank you,but i wanted to have the laptop how i want it, not how dell want it.
I did not buy it from dell i bought it privately which probably make things awkward for me at best.
Would anyone know how to get rid of all things Dell to start a fresh?. -
It's true that you need XP SP2 to do the install. You can slipstream SP2 into your XP disk. It's very easy. Go here and follow the instructions:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp
Once you have your newly created XP SP2 disk, you won't have problems installing Windows. -
Well thank you so much, just ordered nero6.6 to carry this out.
I did manage to incorperate the two on a cd but it came out at 922mb,should i say ready for burning.Hope to get round this though. -
Here i am again,i cant copy xp with sp2 as xp is 566mb and sp2is 366mb.The slipstreaming goes fine but what am i to do about this, also would anyone know how to install new bios.
-
Did you follow the guide, including the part about creating the bootable CD? I've never had a problem burning the slipstreamed files onto a CD.
-
Can anyone tell me how big the file size of windows xp pro should be and is it just the i386 file i need as the finished slipstreamed file always ends up about 900 mb large.
-
You didn't answer my question: Did you follow the guide?
-
Yes i did but i think i bought the wrong nero. It is nero express. Anyway thank you everyone for the advice, i splashed out on a new copy of windows xp professional with sp2 included and yes has loaded up great. Thanks everyone.

Glad you got it sorted. I totally forgot how crappy NE is. You found out the hard way. Sorry about that.
Stop message.
