Hello All,
I have had my m1210 for close to 3 months now and everythings been working great. On the bottom edge of the border of the screen there is this line of black marks forming along the bottom edge and its really driving me crazy. I've kept my m1210 clean and have taken good care of it so far. I don't know what could have caused it. I tried to take a picture of it with my phone, its not very good quality though.

I also have these marks but they dont bother me at all. I actually didnt even notice them until I read your thread. Their probably just dirt.

I have the exact same thing going on, its very faint. At first i thought I could rub some of it off, but after scrubbing a tiny bit at it with a moist q-tip, didnt do anything. I dont understand how these small scratch marks would get there, maybe closing it does something to it.
-
All of the M1210 have this mark on them?
-
Hmm...interesting. Mine dosent have any of these lines. It does look like there are some similar makes in a few spots. I took my Monster cleaner with my Monster micro-fiber and it didnt do anything to it. Mabey its the pain coming off when its closed and opened repeatidly.
-
sheff159, you have similar marks in a few spots?
-
it bothers me a little, i mean, its a relatively new computer and its already getting marks and stuff, thanks for the response from everyone, im glad im not the only one with this problem, maybe a problem in the design?

i have that as well, and was scratching my head. Itll be good to keep an eye on this and we can all make a case to dell later if it gets worse. I mean its not an area that is touched at all. So closing the lid has to be the culprit.
-
Yea after trying to clean it the marks did not come off. I am not a little bothered as well because you know their going to just get worse.
Yea if it gets really bad I will call dell and demand a repair. -
I have a possible explanation. When you close your lid, the portion where the marks are rubs up against the notebook. When the lid moves a little while closed the rubbing results in the scratch marks. This is a design flaw and should be under dells warranty.
Basically I think the space between the lid and the notebook is too small and when the lid moves it rubs and results in these scratches. -
i have the same marks on my M140...
had them for a while too
sounds like Dell has some redesigning to do...sony batteries...scratches...DVD drives that vibrate the computer apart! -
Its not a solid line like in the pictures, but I can see the same thing to start forming now that I look hard at it.
-
Yea it will start out small but will eventually form a clear line. For now I wont do anything but I will probably end up calling dell.
-
-
i sure hope i don't get weird mark on mine
-
most likely all m1210s will develop this same issue. Im curious to see what dells response will be. I doubt a new computer, so anything else they could think of as a "solution" will be a hassle for us.
-
Night_2004: DVD drives that "shake the computer apart" ? Please expand on this issue.
Sheff: Yours has the marks forming too? This is definately a design flaw then. -
I think whats your finding thats causing those marks is actually the paint on the plastic slowly coming off, that particular section of the laptop is always rubbing when opening and closing. Thats what it really looks to be and why it cannot be cleaned off.
-
Wow. Good thing I saw this before mine even gets built. I'm going to put something between the parts when I close it.

I definitely wont do anything for now. I cant even see them unless I look pretty hard, and definitely dont want to deal with a bunch of shipping things in to fix such a small problem.
-
Yea this is one of those things that will form gradually and take a while. We should just watch it and if it becomes really bad then well take action.
-
OH man and I just chose this laptop and I thought it was good... now there's these kinds of problems. *Thinking if I should cancel the order*

Thats exactly what I have. Lets just monitor it for now and do something if it gets really bad.
-
Yup thats exactly what im strating to see too. Its not that bad for me yet, but I can see it starting if I look real hard.
-
i don't think i will get this on my 640m
-
-
It has happened to another individual in Notebookforum.com
I guess 2 reported-cases.

Time to revisit this, mine is MUCH worse now and noticeable without focusing on it...i can only imagine how bad itll look in a couple more months. Anyone get any help from dell on this yet?
-
does the warranty really cover these things?
It is completely superficial after all, and it won't affect the workings of the notebook. Looks ugly though. Perhaps Dell will give free paint -
hey..i got a few very light marks like that on my laptop in around the same spot...i was able to rub them off very easily
-
I don't understand why something so minor is causing such a fuss. I defintely don't see why someone would cancel a Dell order because of a very faint scratch.
-
look at the picture i posted, then imagine 2 to 3 times worse now. It is an issue that should not happen. Its a design flaw in the way the monitor makes contact with the base of the laptop.
-
I also have an update:
As expected, the marks have gotten alot worse. Not only under the screen but theres now noticable marks on the palm rest. While the palm rest is expected, my 1210 is only a few months old.
I have the three year damage warranty, do you guys think this would be covered? I thought they could replace the palm rest and area under the screen. I understand the palm rest is due to my hands but I will pay for another palm rest and even the part under the screen if its available. Anyone know? -
I have found the necessary parts at other online dealers. The portion under the screen is $40 and is the entire front plastic casing around the screen and the palmrest is $80. I have attached the links below:
